Fun Craft: Christmas Family Trees

Christmas trees – they serve as both the main Christmas season decoration & a great bonding tool for family during the holiday season. Decorating them with your family enjoying carols & laughs along the way is one of the things I look forward to all year round. But why not take a twist to the traditional tree with your little ones? Nothing is cuter than a set of tootsie trees hanging on the wall.

Materials:

  • Non-toxic paint – green & yellow
  • Black or brown marker pen
  • Canvases – one for each family member
  • Small items to decorate your tootsie trees – we used stick on jewels

How To:

  1. First of all get your children to sit down &clean their feet so that no dirt or dust is transferred to the canvas within the paint.
  2. Paint each members feet green on the base – make sure that there is a very thick layer of paint to ensure that the whole print comes out on the canvas.
  3. Place one foot on the canvas on a slight angle with your heel at the top of the canvas & pinkie to leaning towards the outer side leaving enough room for a star at the top.
  4. Repeat the above step again with your other foot, being sure to overlap your heel print at the top to keep the point of the tree print.
  5. Let the paint dry.
  6. Now it’s time to decorate. Paint on your star to top off the tree, use your marker to draw on the stump of the tree then decorate as you wish.

Tip: I found with smaller children to prevent smudging when printing the feet on the canvas, leave your child seated & hold their foot still while you press the canvas onto the base of their foot. It’s always worked a treat for me.

If you do this every year & can watch how much your little one’s feet have grown between each Christmas & doubles as an amazing keepsake.

Wishing you all the happiest of holidays this silly season!
