In the Spotlight with Rae Dunn

Years ago I purchased an adorable little 3×3 inch plate at a fun shop in Laguna Beach, California.  It is just a simple porcelain plate with a picture of a spoon on it but I just love it for it’s simple – yet functional design.  It reminds me a bit of the design concept that stems from Japan where less is more and to choose only those items to place in your house that you find beautiful.  So I am very excited that I had a chance to speak to the person behind the amazing company, Rae Dunn of Rae Dunn Clay.  I think you will fall in love with her work as much as I did years ago.  She has even provided dandelion moms a chance to win a set of  Salt&Pepper containers.  Check out what she has to say about how she started her business of creating gorgeous ceramic pieces and where she finds inspiration for her work.

What was the inspiration behind starting your company Rae Dunn?

my company organically evolved over the years. it was definitely not my dream to start a line of ceramics ! i had randomly signed up for a ceramics class and it quite literally took over my life. it was all i wanted to do. soon after, my products were being sought after by stores and i realized that i had a product that was sellable. that was the start of my business and it has grown substantially over the years (almost 20 years). i think when you have passion for something, anything is possible.

What has been some of the challenges for you in this economy?

i think you have to be smart about where you are spending your money and always try to keep your costs down. my overhead is quite low and i find ways to do things in a cost efficient manner.

Where do you find your inspiration behind your creations?

i find a lot of inspiration in nature and by just being out in the world. i am an avid traveler and am always inspired by just observing things around me in daily life. i’m also inspired by need (i.e. . . products that i actually need that i can’t find).

Any news you want to share with dandelion moms?

at this juncture in my life, i am inspired to do more fine art (painting, non functional sculptural forms, sewing, . . . ). after so many years of doing production and custom work, i feel like now i want to make what I want to make, not what people want or what i think they would want ! i also have a line of manufactured wares that i will continue to design.

Thanks so much Rae – your work is amazing and thank you for providing dandelinon moms a chance to win those adorable square Salt & Pepper ceramics.
