In the Spotlight: WoonHung Jewelry

This week we are featuring Yvonne Chia who went after her dream of starting her own jewelry company several years ago and has gone on to be quite successful at it!  Her jewelry is sold in Barney’s New York in Japan and in many top boutiques.  I like how her pieces have a natural element feel to them.  They are definitely statement pieces that could tie together a whole outfit!  There is a simplicity to them but they are quite beautiful in this simplicity.

She is based out of Singapore and took some time to talk to us about her company, WoonHung.

Tell us how you and when you started your jewelry design company?
It’s a long story. The short version is, I started about 9 years ago. Prior to that, for about a year, it was a serious hobby and I was garnering a good following of customers. That’s when I decided to take the plunge & convert to full-time 9 years back. Life was never the same after that.

Where do you get your inspiration for your cool designs?
I’m the same as other designers in that sense. We draw inspiration from whatever we see, touch, feel, experience, even the mistakes  we encounter. Recently, I was packing my client’s necklace & I struggled to keep the chains even. And that got me thinking of a design using uneven chains, patterned & layered.  I get excited over the possibilities I envision in my mind & how that develops into a piece of jewellery.

What are some of your favorite pieces?

I have 2 broad categories of designs – natural range & 14k gold. Right now, I’m in love with the natural range because I work with very skilled makers & crafts people. I am still learning about what natural materials can do & how that affects the livelihood in Philippines. That became my unexpected & maybe unspoken mission steered me in a good working direction.
