Inspirational Mom: Natalia Ortiz

Huggies Mom provides grants to deserving moms each year in their Huggies Mom Inspired Grant Program they conduct once a year.  I heard about Natalia Ortiz as she was one of the winners last year for the grant for her Two Hippo’s company.  She created the Wall Bumpi after having problems with her young daughter hitting her head on the wall while sleeping in her big girl bed!  I love when our children provide inspiration for creating!  Natalia realized that other parents might in fact have similiar problems, and thus started her journey to design and manufacture a Wall Bumpi that could not only protect children from hurting themselves on walls, but also provides a safety net around a baby.  These Wall Bumpi’s are so portable you can bring them for play dates or to grandma’s house. I had a chance to speak to Natalia about her company and challenges she faces as a mom and business owner.

Tell us where the idea to create Wall Bumpi came about?

The Wall Bumpi was created by my husband and I when we transitioned our 16 month old daughter to a twin size bed because we found her trying to jump out of her crib.  We put the bed against the wall and used a traditional bed rail on the other side.  We also piled the pillows towards the end of the bed so she would roll out.  She had a terrible time- she moved around a lot in her sleep and she would bang her head a lot against the wall and the rail.  I looked for other rails that could also be used against the wall.  I was also tired on making the bed in the morning with all the pillows.  When I didn’t find anything in the Internet I went to the fabric store and with my husbands help designed our first wall Bumpi.  It worked as a rail, as a bumper and on all four sides of the bed.  It was also easy to take to grandmas!

What are some of the challenges you face running your own business and juggling being a mom, wife, friend, etc.  What are some things that you find helpful that helps you manage it all?

The challenge is balancing your time and believing in yourself.   Some times one pulls more than the other, but I always remind myself when things feel crazy that my priority are my kids.  I try and be as organized as I can be and I’ve learned to ask for help.  Doing it all myself is impossible!  This year I hired an accountant and a freelance marketing consultant to help me stay focused.  My husband also plays a huge part- he’s my rock.  At the beginning I used to cry once a month, and he was always there to motivate me and remind me of what’s important – our family & our health.
