Photography Tips: Capturing the Moments

Capturing the Moments with Photography

By Becky Lew, Photographer

As a photographer, I wanted to provide some tips to help you capture the moments that make up your life.  Following are some things that I have found to be helpful in taking photographs.

Create an Adventure:

Make it an adventure – you can even sketch out the idea, or make a pinterest board!.  This family wanted a circus theme. The mom bought the girls outfits on etsy and brought costumes, top hats, and fun props to go along with their theme.  They came ready to play. They wanted to ride the carousel and dance together.  It was darling and as you can tell, the kids (and mom and dad) had a blast!

Remember to Get Down to their Level:

If brother and sister like to roll around in the grass, roll around with them. Don’t be afraid to get dirty, that’s sometimes how you get the shot!

 Bring Props:

Creating moments is important… Bringing along toys to encourage play is helpful especially if your child doesn’t like to be in front of the camera.  Telling your child to stand and smile is probably the most grueling task EVER! Well at least for me. Now, if I just happen to be there with my camera while my husband and child play, that’s where the magic happens!

 Be Flexible:

-do activities that your children want to do! Trust me, when they are happy you will be happy too! There have been too many times when I had a vision in mind and I just wanted my children to model my idea. This seldom works!  Being flexible and letting them be kids and not models always produces the best results!

Is an Epic Battle upon us? I love how these boys wanted to play with their light sabers while their sister held on to her Snow White doll for dear life! This captures a precious stage in their life… Warrior Brothers protecting the galaxy… and their sister!

 Get More Than One Perspective:

Remember, to move around A LOT! -up close/ far/ details – on the ground, maybe even on a stepstool J.

It’s important not to stay in one position!  If you do that, you will only get one perspective!  I love to get wide shots, and detail shots…  There are so many more emotions felt when you can see things from different angles!

Have music be part of your day. Put on your favorite songs and dance around.  I love those unplanned moments when brother is trying to get a rise out of his sister!

 Creating Treasured Moments:

I don’t know about you, but grandparents are the best.  I LOVE capturing grandparents sharing moments with their grandkids!  This sweet grandpa was sharing a war story from when he was flying aircrafts in the Vietnam War!

 Capturing Real Moments:

The truth is that I love to photograph real moments. Yes, sometimes I have to help the “real moment” along. But, with a little patience and flexibility you can capture the extraordinary behind the most ordinary moments. You don’t usually treasure a picture because it’s PERFECT. You treasure it because it takes you back and makes you feel like you were just there in that space and time. That is priceless!

Let loose, play, pretend, and have fun with your children! With camera in hand and a world to explore you will not only capture this sweet time in their life, you will make precious memories to treasure.
