Inspirational Mom: Tory Johnson of Spark & Hustle

The latest State of Women-Owned Business Report by American Express Open has just been released and provides some interesting insights into the current trends among Women-Owned Businesses (WBE). The study has the following conclusions about women-owned businesses in 2012:

  • There are over 8.3 million women-owned businesses in the United States (8,345,600 to be precise)
  • WBEs are generating $1,291,267,100,000 (nearly $1.3 trillion) in revenues and employing 7,697,000 people
  • Between 1997 and 2012, when the number of businesses in the United States increased by 37%, the number of women-owned firms increased by 54%—a rate 1½ times the national average.*

Finding the Motivation to Go After Your Dreams:

As busy moms it can be difficult to find the inspiration to follow-through with a business idea you have been sitting on for some time or to bring an existing business to the next level! Some of you might remember that I wrote a post about Tory Johnson and the Spark & Hustle nationwide tour that I attended last year in Los Angeles.  The LA seminar provided the motivation for me to finally create dandelion moms!  I distinctly remember sitting in my chair listening to the featured mom entrepreneurs on stage talk about their journey of building their businesses – all while raising their families.  Women such as Erin Condren and Wendy Bellissmo who said it wasn’t easy and mistakes were made along the way, but they are happy they went for it!

Tory Johnson: Supporter of Women-Owned Businesses!

That is one of the things I love about Tory Johnson is that she is such a big supporter of women-owned businesses.   She is wild about small business success, which she traces to being unexpectedly fired from a job she loved.  The permanent scar from that pink slip led Tory to shift from employee to entrepreneur.  She’s built two multi-million-dollar businesses—Women For Hire and Spark & Hustle—while serving as a Good Morning America contributor, New York Times bestselling author, contributing editor to SUCCESS magazine and a popular speaker. Her sixth book, Spark & Hustle, is now available nationwide.

I am excited to be attending the LA event again this year next week.  If anyone is on the fence about a business idea they have – no matter how small or big the idea is – I really think these support groups and events Tory has created just might be the place where you find your motivation to just go for it!  I had a chance to ask Tory about some of her favorite moments and how she manages to juggle raising two kids and running a successful business.

What are some of your favorite moments from the Spark & Hustle tour?

I love the connections our attendees make with one another.  The Spark & Hustle community is so strong — and the women become each others best customers, clients, collaborators and champions. The real magic happens when they leave and put great things into action.  That’s the stuff I love.

How do you juggle raising two kids, being a wife and business owner?

I have a lot of help.  My husband works with me, which allows us to manage work and home pretty seamlessly.  My twins are now 15 and they’re very supportive and interested in what I do, which I’m so grateful for.  My staff is diligent and focused–we have our best team ever.  And I focus on day to day….making things happen step by step and in the moment versus becoming overwhelmed by all there is to do and all that I’m likely forgetting.
