Walmart’s Empowering Women Together Program

Walmart Gives Back:

Recently, a Walmart moved into our neighborhood and that center where it is located is just popping now!  I checked it out and was happy to see a healthy lunch box alternative to the packaged lunch boxes my daughter begs me to buy when we are at the grocery store.  Not sure what her fascination is with these lunch boxes – oh yes, I do – must be the Oreo cookie that is inside!  But when I came across a healthy version of the lunchbox at Walmart it was a big relief and now I don’t feel so bad buying a couple as a treat for my six year old.  Most of you have probably shopped at your local Walmart and love the prices and variety they offer.

Empowering Women Together Program:

Recently, they created an awesome campaign called Empowering Women Together Program which is part of Walmart’s Global Women’s Economic 5-year commitment through 2016 to source $20 billion from women-owned businesses.  Empowering Women Together is an online destination that gives shoppers who want to buy unique and interesting products the opportunity to do so while supporting small women-owned businesses around the world.  What I love about this program is that with each purchase, consumers lift and empower the women behind these products to create new jobs and improve both their own lives and the lives of their families and communities.

Online Purchases Support Women-Owned Businesses:

Imagine purchasing a product that a women made in a small village of Kenya and by doing so you are helping to  help her run a business and put food on the table for her family.  Pretty powerful movement if you ask me!  Their Empowering Women Together leverages Walmart’s size and scale to offer access to customers for women who otherwise might be unable to attain it.

Some of the items available through the program include more than 200 items from 19 businesses in nine countries. Products include jewelry from Peru, Rwanda, Kenya and the U.S.; home accessories from Rwanda and Haiti; paper mache from Haiti, apparel and accessories from Rwanda; iPad and laptop cases from Cambodia and Nepal; coffee and tea sets sourced globally and made in America; and specialty foods made in America and Canada.

Worldwide there are over 700 million women who live in poverty.
