In the Spotlight with Life is Rosey Jewelry

As some of you might know, this past month I attended the Tory Johnson Spark & Hustle Los Angeles event which provided pep talks from other women business owners, as well as information and resources for women so they can realize their dream of starting a business.  The seminar also provided tools to help existing businesses take the next step.  I couldn’t believe the number of driven women who attended the seminar and it felt great to be around these women who were going after their dreams!  I met Sarah Jane Nelson on one of our breaks and she told me she makes custom jewelry.  She showed me some of her jewelry and I fell in love with her work.  All of her jewelry is handcrafted in solid sterling silver, copper, bronze, and gold and each piece can be customized with meaningful words or phrases.  She calls it wearable art.  I had a chance to speak to Sarah about her inspiration behind starting her jewelry business.  Plus she is providing a custom necklace for a lucky dandelion mom just in time for Mother’s Day so make sure to enter!

Tell us what inspired you to start making personalized jewelry?
I spent my early 20’s on Broadway, Film, and TV but after I had my first child, Rosalee, I knew that I wanted a creative outlet that would give me the flexibility to be with her as much as possible.  Life is Rosey was born and I have been creating handmade, personalized jewelry ever since!
Each day I sit down at my bench and create personalized handmade jewelry that inspires and motivates the wearer. From the proud mom’s necklace layered with her kids names, to the grandmother’s necklace with initials of her 3 kids, 10 grandkids, and 16 great-grandkids. I recently created a set of memorial keyrings for the wife and daughters of a fallen firefighter, and I always cry and say a prayer as I craft a necklace for a soldier, hoping that he or she will find comfort from the names of their loved ones. My work is all custom, and I really enjoy the story behind each creation. Birthdates, nicknames, inspirational words, lucky numbers song lyrics, and meaningful verses and quotes… Life is Rosey is jewelry that speaks to what is meaningful in life and that makes my life pretty Rosey too.  See my work at www.lifeisrosey.com

What have been some of your challenges to juggle a business, mother and wife?
If a mom is looking to start her own business – what are some recommendations you would suggest?
BALANCE! It’s not easy but it’s so important. When you first start a business (especially a home-based business) it takes over the home.  It’s hard to turn off the computer and be present with your family because you mind is racing with ideas, plans, and to do lists, but it’s so important to CREATE BALANCE.  Sometimes that means that the business will have to grow a little more slowly, but if you’re family is #1 then it’s a fine trade-off.
That said, it’s important that you treat your business like a business and not a hobby. Set work hours and stick to them as much as possible. Make sure you partner is on board because they will need to pick up some slack for this extra work time.
At first, my husband was saying, “I don’t know about this!” I had jewelry supplies all over our tiny house and was obsessed with design ideas, research, and educating myself about business.  Eventually, we had to sit down and talk about what we both wanted.  Now, 6 years later, we have found a wonderful groove and the income from LIFE IS ROSEY and LIFE IS ROSEY Weddings supports our family.  We set a schedule and I work really hard, but I also know when to put down my work and head with the family (Rosey age 7 and Mateo age 5) for a walk to get frozen yogurt or a cupcake. These are days we’ll always remember and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with striving to have it all: creativity in my work, fun and romance with my husband, family fun, and togetherness. I realized early on that I am not my best self when I don’t have creative work that fulfills me. I love my kids, but I needed to be me as well.  We’re always working on that balance, and making the most of every day.
