Latest & Greatest :: Standing Up by Director D.J. Caruso
Did you know that more than 160,000 U.S. students stay home from school each day from fear of being bullied? (Source: Pacer.org) Just this week while waiting in my dentists office, I read two headlines on the cover of People about two young girls who committed suicide due to bullying at school. It broke my heart to see two young girl’s faces whose lives were cut short by something as useless and cruel as bullying. When I was in 3rd grade there were a group of girls who thought it was fun to start picking on me until it escalated to where I asked my mom if I could switch schools. Luckily, she listened to me and I started fresh at a new school and never had that experience again. But when you are young it can be very traumatic and affects how you feel about yourself. And with our technology today, and social media platforms, bullying has taken on a whole new level of intensity.
That is why I would like to showcase the movie Standing Up, which is based on one of the most beloved Young Adult novels of all time and directed by the acclaimed D.J. Caruso, Standing Up follows two kids who get bullied by a vicious summer camp prank. Left together on an island, their adventure begins once they decide not to be victims and instead they Stand Up!
Standing Up is an adorable and heart-warming gem of movie with an important anti-bullying message that’s suitable for the whole family! The DVD was released on August 20.
What can be done to help the bullied “stand up” for themselves? One of the best things we can do to understand the problem and discuss solutions is to be inspired. The movie “Standing Up” is THAT inspiration.
