Dwell :: Modern Holiday Decor & Crafts
We are preparing to host Thanksgiving this year and found some wonderful recipes to try out as well as décor ideas. Make sure to check out these posts to get some new ideas as well! Friends, Christmas will be here before you know it and I find it less stressful if I take care of my shopping way ahead of time so I can actually sit back and enjoy the season with family and friends. I don’t know how people can go shopping the day or so before Christmas at the malls – how stressful! So here’s to planning a bit ahead (we have a little over 6 weeks left) and enjoy trying out a few of these modern holiday décor and craft ideas.
A Modern Take on the Holidays:
I have always been a big fan of modern décor – mostly for the simplistic designs and 1950’s and 1960’s furniture. This blogger has some great ideas – I like how she uses simple ribbons and pinecones to make a garland. Also, her presents look great and you could cut costs by just cutting out the letters and decorate them with glitter to get the same effect. For more ideas go to Prep4Wedding.
Change your Accessories with the Seasons:
The blogger over at Brooklyn Limestone talks about how she will just switch up her pillows and blankets depending on the season. For October and November she says it was all about orange, but now with the holidays coming up she switch them up with shades of green. She also shows you how to make this cute Christmas tree with acorns display. To read more go to Brooklyn Limestone.
Bring Nature to the Table:
I really like this idea of using greens for the main display for your holiday dinner. You can add some pinecones and berries to add some more texture and color. And I love this berry color mixed in with the greens. Always make sure to include some candles at the table – adds so much don’t you think! To read more go to Family Circle.
Add Some More Green:
This idea was found on Pinterest and I love how it drapes down the staircase mantel. What a great idea! You can add some teal and green plastic (if you have kids) bulbs for a modern take! Love this rocking chair – this was the one we purchased when my daughter was born and is sitting in her room. I plan to give it to her when she goes off to college! It is a timeless classic and you can find imitations of this chair on Overstock (just saying). Image found on Pinterest.
A Modern Advent Calendar:
This blogger sells this Advent Calendar on Etsy but if you are so inclined you could make something like it! Love this idea! To read more go to Houzz.
Handmade Modern Baubles:
This craft reminds me of the Christmas bulbs my mom and I use to make. I like that the brass tacks already come ready to go and you can just push them in – very easy craft and they look great in a modern room. She provides a step-by-step tutorial of how to make your own here.
Glittered Acorns:
Love this idea from Mother Earth News. What a fun take on acorns. She provides a tutorial of how to make your won glittery acorns. This would look great on your mantel or as the holiday meal centerpiece. To read more go to Mother Earth News.

These are great modern Christmas design ideas. I love the acorns. Simple enough for a group of k-2 kids to do for a Christmas craft project. Moms will love it as decor in their home too!
