Parenting :: Celebrate National Young Readers Week November 11-15th
National Young Readers Week is an annual event that was co-founded in 1989 by Pizza Hut and the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress that encourages a love of reading in kids. Share the timeless classics your parents once read to you, like The Velveteen Rabbit and The Little Engine That Could, with this list of titles inspired by books on Netflix. Introduce your child to favorite characters you grew up with, like Kristy and Claudia of The Babysitters Club or Tia and Tony from Escape to Witch Mountain. National Young Readers Week, November 11 – 15 is a great reason to celebrate these titles. Netflix has put together 13 Great Titles Based on Kids’ Books available on Netflix, for kids of all ages. Spending time reading some of your favorite stories with your child and then watching the movie together just reinforces the love of storytelling! Whole worlds open up once you find that magical book that turns you into a reader! And for moms, dads and older teens, don’t forget to watch one of our favorite novels that hit the big screen – The Hunger Games – just in time before the sequel hits theaters this November 22. I read the Hunger Games and absolutely LOVED it! I thought the movie was really well-done and really enjoyed watching the book come alive on screen!
Big Kid Titles:
2.Escape to Witch Mountain NEW!
3.James and the Giant Peach
4.The Baby-Sitters Club
5.Goosebumps
6.A Wrinkle in Time
Little Kids Titles:
Charlotte’s Web is such a wonderful book. I am glad Netflix reminded me of this classic story that I plan to pick up today at the library to start reading with my daughter. I have seen the trailer for the movie and it looks really well-made. You can’t go wrong with Julia Roberts voiceover for Charlotte!
Book-Covered Letters:
Love this craft idea to personalize your child’s room with his or her favorite story book pages, with these book-covered letters. What a fantastic idea that Kelly Ladd Sanchez created for Netflix viewers. To read how to make this adorable craft just go to klscrafts.com.
Mini Peach Pie Pockets with Cinnamon Whipped Cream:
Yummy! This looks like an easy recipe to make and enjoy while watching or reading Jack and the Giant Peach. To read how to make these delicious desserts go to Always Order Dessert.com.
What I think is so great about all of these ideas is that it encourages family time and encourages a love of reading in our kids. I love to read and know that it was something that was encouraged in me as a child – mostly just by them modeling this “hobby.” My parents were always reading – whether it was crime novels, magazines or the newspapers – it was something I saw them doing all the time. Now with all of the tech devices available – we have the choice to read the book on a Kindle or iPad and watch the movie on the computer if we chose to! There are so many ways to encourage children to discover the wonderful world of stories and all the magic they bring into your life!
