Dwell :: Decorating a Small Space for the Holidays

In my last post I mentioned that this year we won’t be getting a tree because it will not last more than a few minutes with our 85 pound 8 month old German Shepherd mix puppy!  These days I find him chewing on anything – which includes our cat, so I think we made a wise choice to not get a large tree this year.  However, I am a bit sad about it so I am looking for other ways to decorate our place for the holidays.  I love this time of year and it makes me so happy to have the fireplace on, the candles and tree lit.  Here are some ideas if you have a smaller space like we do or just want to get some festive holiday décor ideas to try out this year!  Have fun and enjoy your holiday season!

Put a Tree on it:

Love this idea from Furniture 4 World.  They put a small, live tree on a side table and decorated it with some fun ornaments.  And love the candy tray they have displayed as well.  Just saw two cute 3-tier trays in the West Elm and Potter Barn Holiday catalogue!  To read more go to Furniture 4 World.

Use What You Have:

These simple ideas come from Family Holiday and demonstrate how a simple addition of some red sleigh bells hanging from your coat hanger can add so much.  Just a pop of color around the house can really do a lot to help bring in the season.  I love those lime green rain boots as well!  I also like how they mixed color schemes – such as blues, greens and reds.  To read more go to Family Holiday.

Add a pop of color throughout the house:

What I love about these ideas – is that it reminds you that you don’t need to stop with just decorating the living room – why not add some little tree’s in the kitchen as well!  And the Muslim cloth covering the bottom of the pots look great tied with the red ribbon.  To read more go to Furniture 4 World.

Add some holiday bulbs around the house:

This year we added some holiday bulbs in a wooden tray on our front doorstep to add some fun to our holiday décor.  Pretty multi-colored bulbs are an inexpensive way to decorate for the holidays and they look so great.  Just love how these bulbs look hanging from the kitchen window.  To read more go to Inspiration for Home.

Sometimes Less is More:

I love the simplicity of these decorations!  Especially those cute red boots that add some festive color! And these straw baskets are great staples to have around the house as you can add colorful toys, (or socks in this case), to decorate for the holidays.  To read more go to Family Holiday.

Create a unique Christmas/Family Tree:

This idea also comes from Furniture 4 World and uses baby pictures from the family to create a unique family tree.  I love how this looks and what a fun project!  When friends and family come over you can ask them to guess who is who!  To read more go to Furniture 4 World.

Decorate the Hall and Stairway:

What a fun idea from Better Homes and Garden.  They also provide a tutorial on how to make those cute felt flowers.  I would love to do this but trying to figure out how to attach it to the stairway mantle as we don’t have any holes to weave it through.  Anyhow, if you do have this type of staircase (or come up with a clever idea on how to attach it) this would be so festive!  To read more go to Better Homes and Gardens.

Add some color:

This idea might work as well.  If you have  small space it would look nice to add a holiday tree on a counter or desktop.  This is small enough to fit most spaces and remember to add some touches of red throughout as well.  Or you can try the more modern look with teals, greens and blues.  To read more go to Brother Bangun.
