DIY :: Fun Decor Ideas for Children’s Rooms

Decorating your children’s room can be so much fun!  Especially if they join in and contribute with artwork that you can frame and include in their room.  While pregnant, I must have looked at a ton of décor magazines (life before Pinterest) looking for ideas for her nursery.  Thank goodness I came across the store and website Room & Board because they were offering some more modern ideas – such as polka dots (you can purchase the decals on Amazon), simple furniture and knitted dolls.  I used their catalogue for ideas and went about sourcing a cheaper way to incorporate some of the into her room. You don’t have to break the bank decorating your children’s rooms and we found some really great ideas on Pinterest.  I am constantly amazed at how clever and creative these bloggers are and absolutely love all of these DIY projects!  We might be trying out a couple of these cool ideas – love the colored cork boards.

DIY Dollhouse:

See what I mean!  This blogger at Media Cache used an old bookcase to create a very cool dollhouse.  Just use your favorite fabrics or thick papers as the wallpaper in each of the room.  And I would check eBay for vintage dollhouse furniture.  A couple years ago I came across an estate sale that had a bag of vintage dollhouse furniture for less than $20 – boy was I excited about this treasure!  Most of it is from the 1940’s and it is sitting in my daughter’s dollhouse ready to be played with.  Image found at Media Cache.

A Colorful Treasure Trove:

Image all the fun things you two can hide in this old library file cabinet.  It looks like they used a couple to stack them (I would probably only use two so it doesn’t fall over when the kids decide to climb on top of it).  The whole family can get in on the fun and paint them.  Image found at Tumblr.

DIY Coat Tree:

I absolutely love this idea!  You could make one for your kids room as well as the entry way if you have the space.  This one is made from recycled wood and old rulers.  There are over 23 coat tree ideas found on Lush Home that just might inspire you to try this DIY craft!  To read more go to Lush Home.

Create a Chalkboard Wall or Door:

When I saw this idea years ago, I went crazy!  We painted the back of my daughter’s door, our kitchen pantry and our washer/dryer door.  There are so many fun colors to chose from and this is a really simple DIY Project that is just too much fun! We used this brand which comes in a whole slew of colors so make sure to google it.  Every season we change up what is on our kitchen pantry door – and my daughter has free reign to draw what she wants on her “door”.  Image found on Pinterest.

For the World Traveler:

This is such a fun idea and you can use just about any type of paper you want!  Polka dots would be fun for a girls room, and Lego paper might be fun for your boys room.  She purchased this inexpensive clock at IKEA.  Image found at Pinterest.

DIY Beanbag Bookends:

This would make a great gift as well!  These beanbag book ends are so fun and check out the cork they glued onto the edge of the ledge.  What a clever idea and allows you to pin up their latest masterpieces!  There are a ton of DIY bookend ideas at Buzzfeed.

Modern Cork Boards:

I have been looking for a way to display our notes and pictures in our kitchen area and really like this idea.  With this idea, you can paint the cork boards to match your décor and even create a whole wall of these if you want to! This would also look great in the kids room – above their bed or desk. Image found at Pinterest.

LEGO Art:

Are your kids huge LEGO fans?  This would look great in their room and is fairly inexpensive (minus the cost of the LEGO’s) way to display their latest creations.  This type of frame could be found on Amazon or your local craft store.  Image found at Tip Junkie.  Make sure to check out her site as she has a ton of LEGO inspired décor ideas!
