Dwell :: Fabulous DIY Laundry Room Ideas

Tis the season for spring cleaning! Spring officially begins March 20th so let’s start decluttering and redecorating now. At least that was my thought process this past weekend as I am ready for the house to get into shape. I wanted to start with our laundry room because I am in there so much. Not sure how we end up with Mount Laundry every week with just four of us (my mother is staying with us at the moment) but we do go through so much laundry. I figured it was time to finish the job I started last year and create a laundry room that is bright and cheerful.
Following are some ideas I found via Pinterest that really won’t break the bank. You can pick up a gallon of paint for around $25 in your favorite color and paint the room in one afternoon. You won’t be disappointed with the results. Below is our AFTER picture – as I didn’t have it in me to take a BEFORE picture – let’s suffice to say it looks much better now and you probably didn’t want to see my Mount Laundry anyway! I picked up that glass jar at Pier One for around $10 and filled it with OxyClean. I plan to get a colorful wastebasket from Marshalls today and maybe a larger rug, but everything you see in the picture I had laying around the house.
Here’s to a fresh start and a decluttered house this springtime. Let’s take it step by step. First step – laundry room.
First: Declutter the room. This was an important step for our laundry room as I think I had every purse I owned hanging from the cute coat hanger you see – which you couldn’t really see before. I placed them in a plastic container in my closet upstairs since I pretty much use only a couple anyways.
Second: Hang up some shelving. I purchased the white shelf from IKEA who really has the best selection in town for shelves, linens and little containers. Plus you can pick up some inexpensive frames and hang some of your children’s artwork on the walls. This would make for a fun addition. And I just love the Eames-inspired coat rack I purchased online for next to nothing. I hang my purse and my daughter’s backpack on it. You can add a wicker basket and put any plastic bags you might need.
Third: Add some fun. Once the room is decluttered, see if it might need a fresh coat of paint. I had this room painted over a year ago and just now finsihiing up the room – so don’t feel bad if your room is lacking! These things can take time! I found the polka dot decals at our local Marshalls, but you can find them online – just Google decals and lots of selections will come up. I plan to add some more to the washer and dryer – just love my polka dots!
Four: Change is good. I plan to add some more to this room – like I absolutely LOVE the idea to use an old dollhouse as storage. And as my seven year old is nearing the end of playing with hers, I think this is going to happen sooner rather than later. Because to be honest, my little tomboy never really got into her dollhouse! I had fun buying it though!
So here are some changes I made in our laundry room. More pictures coming later as we update this room!
Chalk Paint:
Paint the door! We painted one of the doors in the laundry room with this pretty teal chalk paint. It goes on really easily and can transform any room in the house a fun place to leave little notes to each other. I saw this fun idea and since my dryer is notorious for losing socks (I secretly think it is eating them) this was the perfect thing to write. The site where I found this idea put a string across the wall with clothespins hanging up the socks that need a matching pair – too fun! You can check out her adorable laundry room here.
Let’s Makeover Your Laundry Room!
Have some fun:
Love this idea of the decal flowers at the bottom. There are so many decal options out there just Google decals and see what comes up! I really like how she incorporated antique washing room signs. You could probably find some on eBay! Image found at Pinterest.
Add A Fresh Coat of Paint:
I love this color and have it incorporated throughout my house as rugs, towels, and a statement wall. White looks especially great with greens and blues. To get some more ideas go to Sand And Sisal.
Add Some Antiques:
I do love when the garage and laundry room look just as good as the rest of the house. This blogger at Sheila Rumney adds in some lace and antiques in her laundry room to give it a rather unique and well-loved feel to it. Read more here.
Add Some Color:
This is such a great color – whenever I see this color it just jumps out at me – in a good way! It looks great with that blue tile as well. To read more go to Apartment Therapy.
Add a Chandelier:
Yes, what you see is a gorgeous chandelier in the laundry room – and doesn’t it look great?! I love this green and blue combination with a touch of pink as well. To read how to make your own clothespin wall go to Better Homes and Gardens.
DIY Ideas to Try in Your Laundry Room:
A Clothespin Chandelier:
The blogger at Home Talk says this is really easy (and inexpensive) to make. And how fun would that be in your laundry room! To read how to make your own clothespin chandelier go to Home Talk.
A Colorful Laundry Room:
This is a great idea and so creative. This would be super easy to do while you paint your laundry room a new (and cheerful) color. Let’s have some fun doing laundry (at least make it less boring). To read more go to Better Homes and Garden.
She wore a Polka Dot Washer/Dryer…
This is just too great – my fascination with polka dots is never-ending! I used polka dot decals but if you are brave enough to try to paint them on – the blogger at misformama said it was really easy to do. To read how to paint your washer and dryer go to Misformama.net.
Why Not Paint the Ceiling?
This would look great in any room in the house. I like this idea for a children’s bathroom as well. You could probably get some large stencils in a design you like at your local craft store to accomplish this look. Image found on Pinterest.
DIY Stripes:
I have been hearing more and more about washi tape and now I know why! This would look fantastic on the back of the laundry room door or even on your washer and dryer. And since it is tape, it will come right off if you get tired of it. To read more go to A Beautiful Mess.
Recycle:
This is such a fantastic idea and so unique! I definitely plan to do this with my daughter’s dollhouse she is not using anymore (or never actually did). This would look great on the other side of our door and you can store loads of items you use frequently. Image found on Pinterest.
0So what strikes your fancy? Any plans to update your laundry room this spring?
