Fashion :: What to Wear to an Event

We have all received invitations to different types of events at one time or another. Whether it be cocktail, business casual ( I just went to one of those), smart casual (pardon?) or black tie. I am often asked what to wear to certain events.  You can never go wrong with the “little black dress, but I like to put a twist on it or step out of that comfort zone all together. I know that might seem scary and , of course, feeling comfortable no matter what the event is the most important thing. I have put together a some looks that will hopefully inspire you for the next event you are asked to attend. Oh, the other important thing is to have fun!

Lets start with black tie. For me this category is really fun since. It is not as though most of us are going to black tie events many times in a year (maybe you do?) I actually have one coming up in the fall and this dress is on my list as a possibility. Sequined geo modern maxi in cinder available at BCBG stores BCBG is know for their dress making and the prices are affordable.

Leopard strapless gown. I love the funky print on a classic style. Alexis available at Neiman Marcus.

The next category is Cocktail. From my experience, this can be the hardest one to figure out. One rule of thumb I like to keep in my head is that it is better to be a little over dressed than under dressed.

Rebecca Minkoff silk jumpsuit. For certain cocktail type events I would rather wear this than a dress. It seems very comfortable and it is something I can also wear dressed down ( for that I would throw on a flat sandal).

To dress this up all you need are accessories. Go big or go home. This “acid bright” necklace from Banana Republic is AMAZING.

Ok, ok if this is just waaaay out of your comfort zone try this Midnight frost necklace available at Ann Taylor. The bigger the necklace the dressier it looks.

I love this color and the jeweled basket weave detail on the neckline of this dress is gorgeous. Kay Unger available at Neiman Marcus.

Kate Hudson is not only the face of Ann Taylor (where this dress is from) but she wore this dress to a Breast Cancer research event. Modern gala jersey dress. The jersey fabric of this dress make it extra comfortable and the knotted gathering in the front gives it an up to date look. I would probably add something like this to this dress.

The final category is business casual. This entire outfit is spot on for business casual. Silk cotton t-shirt, color block pencil skirt and Natasha booties all from Ann Taylor.

Printed python dress. Animal print truly never goes out of style and this is another piece that can be worn  with flats to give it a much more casual vibe.

Do you have an upcoming event you are planning on dressing up for?
