Explore the Outdoors with PBS Kids

This week PBS KIDS and the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) announced the annual Explore the Outdoors campaign and partnership, which encourages families to celebrate nature and the outdoors this spring!  Starting April 7, PBS KIDS kicks off Earth Month with themed on-air programming and online and mobile content. NRPA members across the country and local PBS member stations are hosting events throughout the month with PBS KIDS Explore the Outdoors activities and materials.  PBS KIDS Explore the Outdoors will include eco-themed programming weeks from WILD KRATTS and ARTHUR, as well as the premiere of “The CYBERCHASE Movie” and the launch of the new web-original PLUM LANDING. Outdoor-themed episodes of a variety of PBS KIDS programs will also air on Earth Day, April 22.

Make sure to stop by the PBS Kids website as they have a ton of fun nature-inspired activities to do with the kids this month!

Arthur’s Green Thumb:

We are really excited to celebrate Earth Day and PBS Kids sent us an Arthur Activity that we share below along with an Earth Day Giveaway!  My daughter provides a short YouTube tutorial on how to make your own garden using old soup cans or planters you might have in the garage or backyard.   Go to pbsparents.org/outdoors to learn how to make your own garden.

First step: Soak the beans in water overnight before you plant them.
First step: Soak the beans in water overnight before you plant them.

Materials:

Beans (pole, lima, or snap beans are easy to grow)

Fork

Marker

Masking Tape

Old Soup Cans (for planters)

Potting Soil

Gravel or pebbles

Directions:

Grow and care for plants with your children.

1. Prepare. Soak the beans overnight so they will grow faster.

2. Plant. Talk with your children about plants, explaining that plants need water and light to live. Help each child fill a can no more than 1/4 full with a small amount of gravel or small pebbles. Then fill each can no more than 3/4 full with potting soil.  Plant the beans that have been soaked overnight under a shallow layer of dirt (one or two beans per can). Place the cans in a sunny area.

3. Nurture. Show children how to water their beans every day or two so that the soil is moist but not wet, and discuss how the plants change as they grow.

Take it Further:

Teach your child how to be good to the environment by playing Groovy Garden!  This game will teach your child little tips and tricks that will help them be greener in their daily routine.  https://pbskids.org/arthur/games/groovygarden
