Earn a FREE Book in the PBS Kids and Pottery Barn Kids “Summer Reading Challenge”
You know what a big fan I am of PBS Kids programming, but you might not know how much I devoured the Pottery Barn Kids catalogue when my daughter was in the womb to get ideas for her nursery! They have such great design ideas and the quality of their products are pretty fantastic! So the collaboration between PBS Kids and Pottery Barn Kids with their Summer Reading Challenge is a great fit! PBS Kids is committed to providing resources and suggestions to promote summer reading. “Research shows that children experience significant learning loss when they do not participate in educational activities during the summer months, and that loss is even greater among children in low-income communities,” said Lesli Rotenberg, General Manager, Children’s Programming, PBS. With their collaboration with Pottery Barn Kids in the Summer Reading Challenge, children are invited to read eight of the children’s books listed below. Children who complete eight of the books and mark off the Summer Reading Challenge bookmark (at participating stores) need to bring it their local Pottery Barn Kids store before July 31st and they will receive a free book and a certificate.

As part of the PBS VIP Mom Bloggers program, we were treated to a visit at the Pottery Barn Kids in Corte Madera. It was a great experience as Christine Malin, the Design Studio Specialist for Pottery Barn Kids provided some tips on how to create a Book Nook for your children to encourage a love of reading. My daughter has had an easier time with math (not sure where she gets this from) than reading but just recently “got” reading and is now challenging herself with chapter books. I really like this idea of creating a place just for reading. Some tips Christine offered include:
1) Comfortable Seating: This could include some large stuffed animals or a bean bag for kids to relax in while reading their favorites books.
2) Include an Area Rug: This would be a nice addition because it will allow them to lay on the floor if they want to while reading.
3) Add a Bookcase: Pottery Barn Kids has a great selection of book cases and this visibility will encourage kids to pick and choose their favorite story.
4) Lighting: It is really important that the lighting is adequate so they aren’t straining to read.
5) Accessibility: This goes with the bookcase suggestion. By providing easy access to the books, this will surely entice them to pick one up.
Make sure to stop by your local Pottery Barn Kids store this summer as they will have Special Weekly Story Time events where you can win some giveaway goodies. Also, some of your favorite PBS Kids characters will be stopping by for a visit at stores through July 17th. To find out more about the summer reading challenge go to www.potterybarnkids.com and make sure to visit the Building Blocks blog for some fun and creative ideas from Pottery Barn Kids. One of the fun crafts we did at our visit included making our a “Ex Libris,” or bookplate for our little ones. Go here to create your own!
We even had a chance to meet and speak to Nancy Guettier about her inspiration behind her children’s books. She has been the VP of Visual Merchandising for PBKids and PBTeen for many years and was inspired to write children’s book after adopting her three children – all of whom have each required her to write a book just for them! You can read more about Nancy and her books here.
Note: We are part of the PBS Kids VIP Program but this does not affect our opinion in any way. We are big fans of both Pottery Barn Kids and PBS Kids!
And Good news! We have a $50 Gift Card from Pottery Barn Kids as a giveaway for our lovely dandelion moms! Good Luck!

We’ve read most but definitely will start with this one (after completion of some others not listed): What Sisters Do Best/What Brothers Do Best by Laura Numeroff and Lynn Munsinger and then go from there for fun reading (btw chapter books are lots of fun! Gretchen read Ever After High the first book which I think is recommended 5th grade up and she is reading the Diary of the Wimpy Kid books too she’s done the first two so we’re on to number 3 now lol) Ian reads some but prefers to be read to (he gets it better and I think he likes the voices I do) reading is huge in our home just glad my kids enjoy it (whether them reading or listening)!!! Great post!
