DIY Ideas for an Awesome Minecraft Party!

Each year my daughter and I talk about what type of theme she wants to have for her upcoming birthday party.  Granted, we usually talk about the theme she wants right after her last party so we can prepare and think about it all year long!  Yes, we get very excited about these parties and I have found Pinterest to be such a great resource.  When she told me she wanted to have a Minecraft theme I set up a board, Kate’s 8th Minecraft Party, on Pinterest so I could pin all the fun ideas I came across on Pinterest throughout the year.  About three weeks ago, she told me she wanted to have a soccer theme instead… hmmm. I told her it was too late that we already had the projects and décor ideas planned.  This was somewhat true, but I wasn’t in the mindset to start all over again!  She was content with a soccer ball piñata as part of the party celebration – who wouldn’t?

Here are some DIY ideas you can incorporate into your Minecraft Party!

Create Some Minecraft Characters:

We visited our local Albertsons and asked the produce section for some boxes.  These were perfect sizes because they were long and narrow which worked for the pig body and legs, Steve’s arms and our spider.  If you are out and about – just ask the store managers if they have any empty boxes.  I recommend to get the ones that will fold up or have a lid.  Next, we went to Michaels for some spray paint and paint.  Paint was a bit cheaper and we purchased smaller sizes for colors that we didn’t use much – like Steve’s face and arms.  Think about what characters you want to create ahead of time and then figure out what pieces will need more coloring.  We purchased black and brown spray paint for the spider and cow.

Once we had a ton of boxes, I taped them up in clear tape (except for Steve’s legs – I used black to show pant legs) and asked my daughter to build the characters.  We looked at pictures on Bing to get an idea of shapes.  This was fun for her to create and once we figured out what boxes went where – we could see what other sizes we might need.  This was done about three days before the party so to give us time to pick them up at our local supermarket.

Next, was the fun part!  Some neighborhood kids joined in the fun of spray painting and painting the boxes.  After the boxes dried, we worked on the faces with colored craft paper.  Again, we looked up images on Bing and Google to see what they should look like and then taped and glued the pieces on.  I was surprised at how good they all turned out!  The kids who knew Minecraft loved them and we ended up finding another party the characters can attend this weekend for a Minecraft-loving kid!

Create some Pixel Artwork:

I saw this idea on Pinterest and loved it!  Just purchase two sets of light and dark green square plates and one set of black plates.  I had my daughter help me with the creeper image but this was really easy to do and looked fabulous!  It is such a great focal point and could be used for a backdrop for pictures!  We just used ducktape at the back of each plate to hand them up and for the most part, they stayed up.

Include some Minecraft Food:

This was actually quite easy to incorporate.  Luckily, a friend from our preschool days (thanks Claire) son just had a Minecraft-themed birthday party, so she gave us that cute Happy Birthday banner you see hanging up and Minecraft food cutouts that we included on our table.  We picked what food we wanted to include at the party.

We selected: red licorice (TNT), carrots (baby carrots), gold (gold chocolates), sticks (pretzels), red balls, (red covered mints) and just went down the list of food that is available on the game.  You could get some of the food at your grocery store (like the pretzels) or go to your local party supply store for the other candy.  Throughout the party the kids kept coming up to the table to grab some Minecraft foods!

CREEPERS JEEPERS:

For the cake, I sent an image of a Creeper to Whole Foods Bakery and they did a fabulous job.  Their cakes are really good and don’t have all the artificial ingredients you find in so many baked goods.  It is a tad pricier but I like their designs and the cakes are awesome!  Many cake shops can put any image you want on a cake so just Google some Minecraft images and see what your child would like. Or if you want to create your own cake and this probably wouldn’t’ be too tough because the cake is square – but it would take time to get all the different colors on the cake.  I was pretty burnt after making the characters so I opted to have the cake made elsewhere and made some cupcakes (with green frosting) with Kate.

Minecraft Games:

There are a ton of ideas on Pinterest but we came up with a Nerfgun game that included a Minecraft Spider.  It just so happened that the box we used for his body had a hole on top which we set up as the target.  The kids lined up and took aim.  When the target was hit, the kids received points and the person who won the most points won that round.  You could do that with any of the characters you create.  Just put a red bullseye on their bodies and have them be target practice!  Here are some characters we created:

All in all, it was a really fun Minecraft/Pool Party!  The kids had a blast!  Hope these inexpensive DIY ideas help you in creating a fun Minecraft Party!  And check out our Minecraft Pinterest Board for some more ideas. Enjoy!

My daughter is planning on keeping Steve in her room she likes him so much!  Personally, I think she is planning on using him for Nerfgun practice…

What I especially like about your party is that everything isn’t ‘Just So’ or ‘Too Perfect.’ Gives non-handy people like myself hope! I’m actually going to attempt making a Plants vs Zombies cake for my grandson’s 6th birthday tomorrow. I may or may not post the result on FB, lol.

    • Melissa

Thanks Nancy! No, I wouldn’t say we were going for a picture-perfect party =) The kids just loved the characters so they don’t need to be just so! I would check Pinterest for some Plants vs. Zombie cake ideas (that would be a fun party idea!). Good luck and post some pictures!

So glad to hear that Nichelle! My daughter had a blast helping me paint them so definitely get him involved if possible =) Have fun!

I’m doing Minecraft party for my son’s 6th birthday next week. I am going to attempt to make those boxes, characters. May I ask, what specific color is Steve’s arms (or skin)? Thank you!

    • Melissa

Sorry Michelle for the delay! I just used a beige paint color. I don’t remember the name as I just used what I already had at home. I am sure whatever you used looked great! Hope you had a great party!
