Day Eight :: Get Your Home Delcuttered in 28 Days
We have a small bathroom downstairs so I like to keep things minimal on the counters.
Today on our Home Challenge adventure let’s work on our bathrooms. You know, the bathroom everyone uses downstairs or the one closest to your living room. That way, as we de-clutter and redecorate our homes, this room that gets a lot of attention from family and guests, will look sparkly and fun! The whole time we are working on this, keep looking at bathrooms in design magazines, Pinterest and even friends bathrooms and see what it is that you like about your favorites. Do you want a pared down bathroom or one that has little mementos from the kids. Or maybe a little of both! So let’s begin!
Step One: Take off everything on your shelves. Put it all aside so you can give it a good cleaning. Don’t forget to do the cabinets (I used furniture polish on ours) and spray some window cleaner on the bathroom doors.
Step Two: Put back only what you really love. This might be harder to do but start slowly. How much room do you have on the counter? Do you want to go for a sparse feeling or have several knickknacks on the counter. You decide what goes back – just do it one item at a time and see what looks best. Maybe cluster together the vases you have in there. Or get a pretty tray to hold your vanity item. I put some seashells that we either purchased or found on a beach walk. I like having these mementos of our family having fun!
You can also add in some fun toys. I like this metal duck toy that we have had for some time now. It’s sort of unexpected and adds a little humor to this room.
Step Three: Add in some artwork. This could be something like a framed picture your kids drew for you. Or maybe you picked up a poster or print at a store and you have been meaning to get it framed. Now is the time! There are a ton of design ideas and below are a couple you can look at to get some ideas. We love this interesting abstract piece from Jennifer Mercede because of the colors and overall vibe. Plus, I have a circular thing going on in my bathroom if you haven’t noticed – round sink, round rug, polka dots on the towels and this painting celebrates circles as well!
We will work on the medicine cabinet and under the sink another day. Let’s just get the clutter off of the counters for today. Make sure to get out those boxes marked Give Away, Sell (think garage sale or Craig’s List) or Donation. That way you are slowly but surely getting things that you no longer need, are broken or don’t want anymore out of your home.
Take it a step further:
If you need to get some new towels for this room. And maybe a matching rug. The ones at Anthropologie are amazing but very pricy. Check back when they are having sales! Love the interesting designs they offer!
Paint this room. Our laundry room and this bathroom are the same color. It feels like a happy color to me. Play around with some paint chips, tape them to the wall and sit with them for a week or so and see what colors you are drawn to. Depending on the size of your bathroom, this could be done in a day no problem!
Get some fun hooks. If you noticed, I don’t have a towel rack but am on the lookout for some fun hooks. I like the round ones I have seen around (and it goes with my circle-themed bathroom). Only get the things you really love! This challenge is about getting rid of what we don’t need or use anymore. Once the house is cleared out, we can start thinking about putting some items back in that we only truly love!
Now enjoy!
