In the Spotlight :: Artist Mike Kungl

Best known for his moderne and nostalgic images, M Kungl’s vintage style is filled with a radiant color palette and a stylish streamlined twist.  I came across Mike Kungl’s work through the Chuck Jones Gallery in Orange County.  I really like his modern take on many of our favorite cartoon and movie characters!  One of my favorite places to visit in Downtown Disney is the Wonderground Art Gallery that has a huge selection of artwork by various artists in many styles.  Mike Kungl works with Disney along with many other companies such as the Chuck Jones Gallery and Stan Lee of Marvel Comics. After completing art and design school M Kungl applied his graphic design education to achieve a successful career in advertising. Spending nearly two decades creating award winning logos, package design and illustration for companies such as Panasonic, Johnson & Johnson, Toshiba and Nissan Motors, Kungl then focused on fine art full time and within two years of heading off on his own was selected to create the official artwork for Miami Beach’s 25th annual Art Deco Weekend. I had a chance to speak to Mike about his work, his vision and he offers advice to aspiring artists.

Tell us what inspired you to get into graphic design and what made you take the leap to do fine art full time?

As a child I always had an appreciation for art and drawing which transferred into a fondness of drafting and mechanical drawing in junior high school. This progressed into a very fortunate high school art program in which my art teacher and guidance counselor observed I would do well in the commercial art industry.

After completing my education in fine art, graphic design and advertising I went to work at an advertising agency. After a successful 25 year advertising and graphic design career running my own design studio, which included package design, illustration and computer 3D graphics from concept to completion, I made the transition to fine art and publishing.
The transition into fine art was quite smooth as I had already been doing a lot of illustration work for my clients which allowed me to develop my art deco style. I like to challenge myself so when I started painting again it was a great opportunity to utilize another medium that I was educated in. My career has evolved into a multifaceted art filled adventure!

What would you say was one of your biggest breaks once you branched out on to your own full time?

I really didn’t have any big breaks. As a teenager I developed a very strong work ethic backed up by extreme diligence. With that said, I would seize any opportunity that I could no matter how great or small and see where it would go with great perseverance. In my opinion “breaks” are only opportunities if you pursue them. That is important for all future artists.

However, my biggest opportunity came along when some of my self published fine art prints were getting color proofed at my printmakers facility and a representative from Disney Fine Art noticed my work and asked if I would interested in painting Disney characters in my style. That is pretty close to a big break and I pursued it to its fullest capacity.

Tell us a bit about your process for creating your work?  What has been some of your favorite projects you have worked on?

Every design or painting starts with a rough thumbnail sketch. That initial sketch gets refined into a rough drawing that continually gets refined until I have my design worked out. From there I scan my drawing and assemble the components in my computer software so I can refine the drawing and figure out a color palette. That drawing is then transferred to my painting surface and used as a guide for the final painting.

My favorite project was 28 pieces of art for the World of Disney, Paris Store. It included ten, twenty foot wide murals with over 25 Disney character’s in all. In addition I designed eight bas relief sculptures for the exterior of the building that are sixteen feet wide each. The project took nearly a year to complete.  https://www.designingdisney.com/content/review-world-disney-store-disneyland-paris

Being able to work with all the licensed characters for some of the top publishers has enabled me to paint all of my favorite childhood characters that I would watch as cartoons, Bugs Bunny being one of my personal favorites.

What character would you say you are most like?

Well, it’s not the handsome prince or the gallant hero that’s for sure. And it’s not the bumbling clown either, a character somewhere in between I guess. At some point I have to take on the persona of all the characters I paint to get into it. Even the princesses, I must say, after all I do shop for glitter at Michael’s when I’m going to paint Tinkerbell!

I’d have to say somewhere in between Bugs Bunny, Darth Vader and Popeye! “I fights to the finach cause I eats my spinach!”
If someone is interested in doing this as a profession, what recommendations would you offer?

Always pursue your dreams, challenge yourself and don’t be afraid. Like anything else this is a tough business, be diligent and take your craft seriously and continue to show your art. Be patient and persevere. It wont come easy but if you hang in there you never know where it will lead.
