Dwell :: House Tour in Orange County

We had a chance to take a tour of the lovely Justine’s home.  She and her family moved into this neighborhood about two years ago but says she is still looking to do more things in the house.  I think it looks fabulous and love all the little touches that just say home.  You can tell a lot of thought went into the design of the home while keeping in mind her two adorable twins and husband.  Actually, she said her husband, Mike, had some input into the home décor, like the cool Buddha statue in the living room and superhero books in their new built-in, but most of the design comes from the talented Justine whose background is in fashion.

We had a chance to interview Justine about where she finds her inspiration and what stores – locally and online – she likes to shop for home décor.

Where do you find inspiration? I would say Instagram is a huge part of inspiration. I follow a ton of interior designers and on Instagram. Another place is home tours where you tour homes that have been decorated by interior designers. That is really great as you get to actually be in the home vs looking a photos on a computer. Pinterest is another place I love to look at for inspiration.

What is your favorite item or part of the house? My favorite part of the house is the kitchen/living area which are combined. It’s bright and open.

What do your friends and family say about your place? We are in a newer home- it’s 2 years old so that is exciting as far as having people over. They do comment on the high ceilings. I believe they are 10 feet which gives the house a really open feel. The other thing is the downstairs flooring- it’s a light wood which most people at least 2 years ago had not seen. Flooring was all dark wood. People usually say they love the floors. It’s a great option to dark as it also gives a lighter open feel as well as hiding dust and scratches!

Proudest DIY project you’ve taken on? I am a total chicken when it comes to DIY and I wish I was not since there are so many cool things you can do. However, my daughters closets had been driving me crazy as far as them things piled on the shelves and floor of their closets. A blogger had posted how she wrapped shoe boxes in wrapping paper for storage. I did that and it’s so cute as well as functional! I wish I had a bigger achievement to share.

Where do you do most of your shopping for the house? All over the place really. – pottery barn, z gallerie, home goods, barcaly butera, l mix high end with low end.
Favorite store? I don’t have a specific favorite but I would have to say a store that just has such beautiful things is Barclay Butera in Newport Beach. His designs are absolutely beautiful from the candles to the furniture and the fabrics they carry are off the charts. If you have not been you defiantly need to browse through.
What advice would you offer when designing one’s home? Look at home magazine sites, Pinterest, Instagram. They offer lots of great inspiration. Try and have some sort of a plan and do little by little, you can always add to the home. I still have so many things that I am going to be adding to this house. It is defiantly not done!

Thank you Justine for letting us take a tour into your happy and bright home!

Here we go!

The entryway is filled with photographs of her smiling twins and husband.  Justine mentioned that she loves to have things monogrammed and you can see this throughout her home.

I love how you will find fresh flowers and plants throughout the house!

The kitchen opens into the dining and living room area making everything very spacious. I love open floor plans like this!  You can see their adorable little Yorkie.

Justine mentioned that she wants to update the door handles eventually and add in some lights above the kitchen island.  I agree with her earlier comment that our homes are a work-in-progress.  We should always be looking at it with fresh eyes and see how we can keep it current.

Bar stools in the kitchen always look so great!  I am looking into adding some into our kitchen update as well.

I love the mix and match patterns you see throughout the home.

The new built-in was designed by Justine and built by a local contractor she has used for years.  She says it is her favorite addition to the house so far.

The Buddha statue was picked up on a weekend-getaway trip.  This is one of her husband, Mike’s, contributions to the home.  I like the mix of eclectic, traditional and modern pieces she uses throughout her home.

You can find coral artwork and pieces around the home.  She found some beautiful coral artwork at Barclay Butera store locally.

The dining area is filled with family photographs and artwork featuring the lights of New York ad Paris.  There are wonderful touches throughout this room including the Chinese ceramic container.

The backyard is filled with my personal favorites, succulents.  These are the best plants!

Heading up the stairs we find stools, candles, flowers and framed pictures that really add so much to this already happy home.

Dwell.IMG_0011

Upstairs you find the four of the five bedrooms.  Reaghan and Alexis had a say in what colors they wanted for their bedrooms and Justine worked around the color-schemes they chose.

Both of the girls rooms are bright and cheerful.  Justine said she found a great tip from a blogger that she found really useful in helping to keep the girls toys organized.  She took colorful wrapping paper and wrapped shoe boxes.  The result is an inexpensive DIY project that looks great and keeps things in their place.  She goes through the girls toys about every 3-4 months to clear out toys they aren’t using anymore.  This is a good rule of thumb in keeping the clutter under control.

The girls upstairs bathroom.  It is great they both have a sink – which I think they will appreciate even more come the teenage years!

Dwell.IMG_0026

The master bedroom is very spacious and bright.  I love all the monogrammed pillows found throughout the home.  It adds a nice touch don’t you think!

Dwell.IMG_0027

You can find beautiful books throughout the home, from the living room, spare bedroom to the bathrooms.  And love the little rock wrapped in yarn that Reaghan gave her for Mother’s Day.

Dwell.IMG_0031

Love the mirrored piece and always been a fan of large plants in the bedroom.  They just add a bit of happiness!  Just make sure your space has enough light.

Dwell.IMG_0032

The beautiful master bathroom marble floors and countertops definitely brings a spa-like feel to the space.

Dwell.IMG_0035

Love the pattern on this stool!  What a great place to do your makeup every morning!
