Health :: Treating Lice without Toxic Chemicals

For the past two years there has been pretty big breakout of lice going on at my daughter’s school.  There is such the stigma about lice and most people are pretty freaked out if they find out their kids have it.  It is such a hassle once your child gets lice and I heard from a friend of mine that they had to toss out many of their daughter’s toys, some clothes and bed linens while she was getting treated for lice.  Another friend cut off all of her son’s hair (he had the long do going on) because he caught some at school and she took the drastic measure of cutting it short.

As a preventative measure, I searched high and low for some non-toxic treatments if in fact my daughter picked it up at school.  I couldn’t believe what was out there on the shelves.  When I read the ingredients I was surprised to see that they were super toxic and chemicals I would never want touching my child’s body!  I remember so clearly something my nutritionist said to me years ago about what we put on our body – is consumed by our body.  Meaning to be aware of what lotions, creams, makeup, etc., I put on my body because it goes into my system through the skin.

Vamousse to the rescue:

I was really happy to learn about a company that offers a safe, non-toxic, pesticide-free solution for the growing problem of head lice among school-age kids.  Yes, can you believe that most of the lice-treatment products out there have pesticides in them!  You can be assured that the Vamousse Lice Treatment and Lice Defense have no chemicals that are harmful for your child.

Lice Infestation second only to the common cold:

Back to school can mean the unpleasant possibility of coming in contact with head lice.  Lice infestation is the second most frequent health issue for school-age kids in the U.S., each year affecting more than 12 million children, ages 3 to 11, second only to the common cold according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  And it spreads so quickly!  That is why once I hear about a breakout I take some preventative measures and use a preventative product on my daughter’s hair before she headed out the door.

However, because children are missing valuable class time, many schools have begun to drop their “no nit” policies that otherwise can bar children previously infested from returning to school unless proven free of lice and nits (eggs).  I know our school is pretty strict about not allowing kids who have head lice to attend school so I find it surprising that some schools across the country will let kids come to school with signs of lice!

Super Lice!

Adding to parents’ concerns is the recent news from the American Chemical Society that pesticide-resistant “super-lice” have been identified in 25 states. Genetic mutations have occurred over time enabling strains of lice to become increasingly resistant to the active ingredients permethrin and pyrethroids used in many pesticide-based OTC treatments.

According to the ACS, “Scientists report that lice populations in at least 25 states have developed resistance to over-the-counter treatments still widely recommended by doctors and schools.”  This statement could be misconstrued to imply that all OTC products are ineffective, and that only those treatments available by a prescription will work. Thankfully, that’s not true.

With Vamousse, parents can feel confident about sending their kids back to school even after an outbreak has occurred.  Another friend of mine told me how so many of the kids at their school had signs of lice and a local company that specialized in treatment of lice was making a bundle of money!  He had both of his kids treated and mentioned how expensive and labor intensive (they had to visit their office several times) it was.

I am glad to see that the Vamousse offers a Lice Treatment and a Lice Defense shampoo using non-toxic, pesticide-free ingredients to eliminate lice so there is no concern about pesticide resistance – and at a fraction of the cost. Vamousse kills lice without the use of the pesticides to which some strains of ‘super lice’ are becoming increasingly resistant.

Vamousse represents the latest innovation in the battle against lice. Their treatment kills lice and their eggs in 1 treatment. The shampoo is designed to defend against lice when used for 10-14 days following a potential exposure, and helps keep your family lice free.  I am such a big believer in prevention and I plan to use this shampoo if I hear of another breakout in school.
