Lawn maintenance

With your lawn perhaps taking up most of the back yard space, it’s important to keep it looking healthy and full of vitality. Always start by removing any weeds and dead grass using a metal rake. Next you can take steps to improve drainage which is recommended at least twice per year. With a garden fork, create holes across the surface of your lawn, leaving a 10 cm gap between each one. Next add a mixture of soil and sand to the holes, filling to the surface. Finish with a generous layer of lawn feed and you’re grass should be looking pristine. It’s amazing how much a well-manicured lawn can transform the entire look of your garden.

Pond care

A bad smelling pond can turn your backyard space from an oasis of tranquility to a no-go area. Avoid this issue by covering the pond with a fine mesh netting, secured in place with heavy bricks at either side. This is especially important during the winter months, where leaves tend to collect and would otherwise block your pond and its filtration system. Check out this guide for more info on pond maintenance.

Add some evergreens

A versatile addition to anyone’s garden, evergreens are not only easy to maintain, they also look great. They can be planted at any time of the year, even blooming during autumn or winter. Choose colorful shrubs such as Camellia and Daphne which are particularly pretty, with deep green foliage and fragrant flowers.

Prepare for the winter

Spend a little time during the winter protecting fragile flowers and your garden will be summer ready when the sunshine returns. Garden hand tools can be used to cut back the stem of delicate species which won’t survive the first frost – pick up the right tools from a trusted retailer. After removing the tubers, these can now be kept in dry compost with the crown left visible. Store them in a cool place, protected from the elements and they’ll be ready to be replanted in the spring.

Reinvent the shed

Turn your tired looking shed into a focal point without having to invest in a new one. After washing the exterior walls and removing any stubborn dirt, add a fresh layer of paint. Many unique colors looks surprisingly good, so let your creativity run wild. It may be the final touch that’s needed to create a beautifully kept garden.

Try some of these tips and you can enjoy a relaxing outdoor space without sacrificing every weekend on boring gardening chores.
