Interview :: Kate Hudson stars in Kung Fu Panda 3
KUNG FU PANDA 3 – IN THEATERS JANURY 29
This month one of the most successful animated franchises in the world returns with its biggest comedy adventure yet, KUNG FU PANDA 3. When Po’s long-lost panda father suddenly reappears, the reunited duo travels to a secret panda paradise to meet scores of hilarious new panda characters. But when the supernatural villain Kai begins to sweep across China defeating all the kung fu masters, Po must do the impossible — learn to train a village full of his fun-loving, clumsy brethren to become the ultimate band of Kung Fu Pandas!
A group of bloggers were invited to an event hosted by 20th Century Fox & DreamWorks Animation at the DreamWorks Studio. We had a chance to see some clips of the movie and meet the adorable Kate Hudson and talk with her about her character Mei Mei. I can’t say very much about the movie at the moment, but I can say I was reminded of how talented Kate Hudson is! She really brings Mei Mei to life and is quite funny. We love her in Almost Famous but that young girl is all grown up and is just as down-to-earth as she appears. She walked in the room and sat down at a large conference table with all of us and you immediately were drawn in by her bubbly and happy energy.
One of the moms mentioned how she liked how confident her character, Mei Mei, is and asked Kate what it was like working on the film.
Kate: “And I just love that about her. She’s so funny. This is the first time I had really done anything animated. So, you kind of wonder how far you’re supposed to push things because it’s really vocally what you’re pushing. We just had to be so big and so huge. And it was so much fun to do it in a booth where you just got to like go there, and you go so far that you end up cracking yourself up. And so, we all had a lot of good laughs with this one. It was really fun.”
Another mom asked what it was like making the leap from acting in films to voicing an animated character and Kate said that “anybody who’s an actor or performer, you know, that’s what we love. We love doing all of it, whatever it means.” She said that it was fun trying out something different.
She spoke about raising two boys (Ryder is eleven and Bingham is four) and how she tries to balance being strict about certain things but also allow them to be who they are. She said she can be silly with them but “has a very, very, very low tolerance for when they’re impolite. To look people in the eye and be polite and recognize how lucky they are, all that stuff. So, I’m pretty strict. But then, on top of all the other stuff I’m really easy with, I just want them to be who they are, and I want them to make mistakes, and I want them to be okay making mistakes. I don’t want them to feel too much expectation.”
I would think it might be hard to raise kids in that industry but she seems determined on raising her kids to be good people who appreciate what they have. Something I think we all aspire to as parents! She said that her son Ryder was most impressed that she got to meet Jack Black.
She is happy that we get to meet more Pandas in Kung Fu Panda 3 and that her character Mei Mei is a great addition to the movie. She really is hysterical! She says that “I think the one thing that’s going to be great is we’re going to see Po learn about who he really is. I think there’s going to be a lot of children out there who are going to relate to that–if not, be able to empathize with what that must feel like. It’s a real coming-of-age story, this one, really. Po’s really coming into himself and connecting to his true nature.”
When asked how she balances the travel she does, starring in movies, starting the affordable athletic clothing line company, Fabletics, and raising two kids, she said that is usually the number one question she gets asked frequently. “But, yes, how do I balance? I think every working woman has the same, obviously I travel a lot for work, so that could be challenging. You just make it work, don’t you? You just try to figure it out.” Yes, that sounds about right! As busy moms we just try to figure it out as we go! It was a real treat sitting down with this very talented actor and hear how she struggles with balancing it all as well!
Be sure to check out the movie this month and hear Kate Hudson do a fantastic job along with an amazing cast: Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman, Jackie Chan, Seth Rogen, Lucy Liu, David Cross, James Hong, Randall Duk Kim, Bryan Cranston, J. K. Simmons.
