READING IS FUNDAMENTAL TAKES PART IN PBS KIDS’ SUMMER LEARNING INITIATIVE
SINCE 1966, RIF HAS DISTRIBUTED MORE THAN 412 MILLION BOOKS TO 40 MILLION CHILDREN NATIONWIDE, IMPROVING THEIR ABILITY TO READ, LEARN AND GROW.
PBS Kids:
Learning Goes Beyond the Classroom This Summer with All-New Programming, Digital Resources, Partnerships and Community Activities Available this Summer
As kids spend time outside the classroom this summer, PBS KIDS will release all-new content and resources to help keep them active and encourage exploration at home and outdoors with their favorite characters. As part of its annual summer learning initiative, PBS KIDS will air all-new specials and episodes from ODD SQUAD, NATURE CAT and READY JET GO! beginning in June, and will offer free digital resources at pbsparents.org/summer to make learning fun all summer long.
More than half of the achievement gap between lower- and higher-income youth can be credited to unequal access to summer learning opportunities*. To help address this, PBS KIDS has partnered with Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas, I Can Read! books published by HarperCollins Children’s Books, the Association of Children’s Museums and Reading Is Fundamental. For 50 years, Reading Is Fundamental has used its experience and expertise to motivate and inspire young children to read.
Through these partnerships, nearly 100 local PBS member stations will be hosting summer learning-related events to offer educational resources to families and children in underserved communities.
“While kids are out of school during the summer months, it’s important that they remain engaged in learning and exploration,” said Lesli Rotenberg, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Children’s Media and Education, PBS. “PBS KIDS is committed to providing learning resources that help to bridge the achievement gap, especially to children in underserved areas who need it most. Every year, our PBS member stations do an exemplary job of bringing these resources to families in their communities to encourage them to keep their minds active all summer long.” Parents can follow PBS KIDS on Twitter and Facebook for more information on free summer learning resources and special offers from PBS KIDS and its partners.
So whether your kids have gone back to school or you would like additional resources to keep their minds active, be sure to check out PBS Parents and Reading is Fundamental this summer and into the school year!
In support of the Summer Learning Initiative, PBS Kids and RIF are offering a lucky dandelion a variety of 10 books that can be used at home, the classroom or maybe even donated to a local library – the choice is yours! Each book is valued between $10-$15. Good Luck!

The Giving Tree, or this Sesame Street book where Ernie has to move things around and it makes Bert crazy (like the crayons have to go in the fish bowl, the fish in the bathtub). Not sure what event starting the shifting of things, but I reference this book so often in my adult life, I wish I still had a copy. Best book ever! 🙂

This giveaway is such a wonderful Idea. I remember reading the Hank the Cowdog series in 5th grade and realizing reading could be goofy, and still enjoyable. (I was a nerd, if I wasn’t learning, it was a waste of time. Lol I took myself very seriously. :-P.)
