Disney’s epic fairy tale Beauty and the Beast returns to Blu-ray with the release of , the original animated classic. The all-star voice cast features Robby Benson as Beast and Paige O’Hara as Belle, along with the castle’s enchanted staff including Jerry Orbach as Lumiere, David Ogden Stiers as Cogsworth, Angela Lansbury as Mrs. Potts, and they’re all just as magical as you remember them!
The beloved animated classic has truly stood the test of time and now a whole new generation of viewers are invited to be our guest and fall in love with this enchanting tale, its captivating characters and unforgettable, award-winning music score and original song, “Beauty and the Beast.”
This month we had a chance to interview Paige O’Hara (voice of “Belle) and Mark Henn (“Belle” animator) and learned a few things about the film. For example, Belle was the first brown-haired, brown-eyed Disney Princess. Up to that time they tended to be blonde or with black hair and blue eyes. Ms. O’Hara spoke about how cool it was that a whole generation of young girls related to Belle because they too, had brown hair and eyes. Paige O’Hara is known as Disney’s heroine, Belle, in the Oscar-winning animated film Beauty and the Beast.
She mentioned that Belle was the first princess that wasn’t looking for love or for a prince. She was busy taking care of her father and reading her books! She embodies girl power and is a strong role model for previous and new generations. Ms. O’Hara said she loved getting fan mail telling her how Belle was their favorite princess because she loved to read as well.
Paige shared with us that she is painting now for Disney and showed us some of her work on her iPhone (she joked around that she still has the iPhone 4 but figures it still works fine so she is happy!). You can find more of her work on her website. Ms. O’Hara is one talented woman whose career has spanned from Broadway to opera, concert stages and recordings. And of course the voice of Belle which was followed with the multi-million selling video Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas and a Grammy for Beauty and the Beast Children’s Singalong.
We will have an upcoming interview with Mark Henn from Chloe, our tween contributor (and aspiring animator/illustrator) but was so neat hearing how this Disney legend visualized what Belle would look like along with the Beast, teacup and other main characters. I can’t wait to share with you our exclusive interview with this legendary artist whose whose contributions to animation have included several Disney leading or title characters, most notably heroines. His work includes Princess Jasmine in Aladdin, Young Simba in The Lion King and the title character in Mulan. He has also been animator of such films as 2007’s Enchanted and the Goofy short How to Hook Up Your Home Theater. Recently, he was the supervising animator of Princess Tiana in The Princess and the Frog.
There is also a host of all-new bonus extras including a rare opportunity to gather around the piano with some of Disney’s greatest composers, including Alan Menken (“Beauty and the Beast,” “Aladdin”), Stephen Schwartz (“The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” “Pocahontas”), Kristen Anderson-Lopez (“Frozen,” Disney’s upcoming “Gigantic”), Robert Lopez (“Frozen,” Disney’s upcoming “Gigantic”) and Lin-Manuel Miranda (Disney’s upcoming “Moana”) as they sing and share how they’ve personally been inspired by the film’s award-winning music; a look at how Walt Disney himself sought to adapt this famous fairytale; a nostalgic look back with Paige O’Hara, the voice of Belle; behind-the-scenes access into the recording booth with the cast; and a sneak peek at Disney’s upcoming live-action re-telling of “Beauty and the Beast,” arriving in theaters in 2017.
