Send the Perfect Care Package to Your College Student!

During my first year in college, my parents sent me a couple care-packages throughout the year and I still remember how exciting it was to get something from home.  Though our kids don’t like to show they are anxious about heading off on their own, I know that I was pretty nervous watching my dad walk into our small-town airport (I went to Chico State and the airport was teeny tiny back in the day) and head up the ramp onto the plane.  I remember thinking “now what?!” I was on my own and didn’t know anyone.  Luckily, I became fast friends with my dorm roommates but being out on your own at the ripe age of 18 can be a little nerve racking.  So when I would get these packages from home, it really made my day!

Here are some ideas to include in the next care package you send off to your kid at college or at boarding school that will surely bring a smile to their face!  Of course, I would add in some of their favorite snacks because if you remember, we tend to eat a lot our freshman year of college.  They don’t call it the Freshman 15 for no reason!  But maybe throw in some healthy snacks as well like nuts and dried fruit, dark chocolate treats and some popcorn.

A Coloring Book:

Yes, they are making coloring books for adults now and I have one!  It has been found to be very therapeutic and relaxing for kids and adults.  Send one off to your college kid along with some markers or colored pencils to help relax them when they get stressed out over exams.

Cute Notebook:

Really encourage them to write down their thoughts and memories while away at school.  I would periodically write in my journal from time to time but I wasn’t consistent.  When I do read what I wrote many years ago, I can’t help but smile thinking about the kid I was.  Include a fun writing pen as well.  I found this hippy pencil at our local Marshalls.

This might bring them back and provide some comfort.  They probably won’t admit it, but they just might like getting their favorite childhood stuffed animal and can blame you for sending it up to them.  In case their friends give them grief.
