This past week my family and I had a chance to attend the Hand Ceremony for Tim Burton and see an early screening of his new movie Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children that will be released in theaters September 30th.  We waited in line with the rest of the press and were ushered aside to wait for the ceremony to start.  I can tell you there were a lot of Tim Burton fans waiting to see their favorite director. My husband played a joke on some of the folks (see below) that you might find humorous!

The adorable Winona Ryder spoke a bit about working with Tim Burton and how he changed her life with the various roles she has played in his movies and that she would do any movie Tim Burton wanted her to make.  She joked that she has transformed herself many times over for the different roles she has played – from Beetlejuice to Edward Scissorhands, she is willing to wear any costume and play any character!  It was a very sweet introduction and Mr. Burton couldn’t wait any longer and jumped up on stage to give her a big hug.  You can see the mutual respect they have for one another.

Mr. Burton spoke about being honored to have his hand and footprint etched in front of the Chinese Theatre and how much he has enjoyed creating films over the years.  He was excited for us to see his latest film Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children and seemed ready to get the party started.  I got the sense that he doesn’t like all the hoopla to be all about him which is pretty remarkable since he as given us some of the most interesting movies of all time! He seems like a very humble person!

It was wonderful seeing him place his hands and footprint into the cement!  Everyone was really hushed while he was doing it as we all knew this was a pretty awesome moment for not only us to watch and experience but I can only imagine how cool it must have felt for Tim Burton himself!  That is quite a honor to be alongside some of our most talented actors, directors and other folk in the entertainment industry.  After he was finished, he walked around and spoke a little with some of the folks attending the ceremony.  It was sweet seeing him give big hugs to either friends or family.  We really enjoyed participating in this special moment for him and all the talented people who worked on the film.

Speaking of which, as we were headed to the theater to catch an early screening, we ran into the author of the series, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, Ranson Riggs!   My daughter is inspired to read the series now after watching the movie!  There was another little girl also taking a picture with Mr. Riggs, and she was beyond excited to meet one of her favorite authors – it was so cool!  She told us that she has read every one of his books and was beyond ecstatic! I am sure it is a pretty neat feeling to have the kids say how much they liked his books.

Once in TCL Chinese Theatre, Ransom Riggs spoke about how he just couldn’t believe this day had finally arrived.  He reminisced how when he first approached his publisher, Quirk Books, about using vernacular photographs that he had collected over the years into a children’s book they had suggested he use the photographs as a guide but to create a chapter book.  The result was Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.  He said that it was like a dream when the book made The New York Times Best Seller list and that Tim Burton wanted to make it into a movie.  He told us that it just didn’t seem real to him and that he would believe it when he was at the front of the theater introducing the movie to an audience – which happened to be all of us!  We all clapped and cheered for him as I can only imagine what an awesome feeling that must be for him to see his book made into a Tim Burton movie!

Next, Tim Burton himself introduced the movie and was excited to share the very first screening with all of us.

We really enjoyed the movie and I can say that you immediately know it is a Tim Burton film.  He just has a way about his movies that immediately let you know who directed it.  From the way he films people’s faces to the sense of something spooky is just around the corner – if you like Tim Burton’s style of film-making you will definitely enjoy this movie!

One of my favorite characters was the headmistress, Miss Alma LeFay Peregrine, played by Eva Green. She just looks like a character in a Tim Burton movie!  You know he has a certain look he goes with and she plays the headmistress just perfectly.  I really enjoyed her character and she draws you in.  You can see what she is feeling just by a slight twitch of her mouth or eyes.  Another favorite was the character who plays the extremely strong child.  There are so many interesting characters in the story it is hard to choose just one favorite.

The two leads, Jake (Asa Butterfield) and Emma (Ella Purnell) both do an excellent job and you are drawn to each of their characters.  I like when movies can transform you into their world and Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children does just that.  For a good two hours you will be taken on a wild journey that spans different worlds and times.

The movie is rated PG13 but my daughter who is ten had no problem with the dancing skeletons and other Tim Burton cool additions.  Like I mentioned, you immediately know this is a Tim Burton film and thus can decide if you think your child can watch the movie.  There are a few scary scenes when the monsters chase the peculiar children but nothing that is over the top.

I hope you come check out the movie on September 30th!  We really enjoyed it and my daughter is inspired to read the novels now – which is always a good thing!

Side Story:

As promised, our funny red-carpet story.  My daughter and I were walking back into the crowd from the TCL Theatre after using the restroom and my husband yells out from the side “Hey!  It’s Melissa Northway!  A big crowd of onlookers who of course have no idea who I am, start whispering to each other “Who is that?” I started laughing (see pic) and told them I was nobody – that my husband was joking around.  I do wish I had taken his advice though and played a bit and starting signing autographs… that would have been funny don’t you think?

Be sure to check out this fun and eccentric movie come September 30th!  You won’t be disappointed!
