Why I Make New Year’s Resolutions

“Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.”

~ Tony Robbins

I’ve always believed in the power of visualization!  If you listen to most inspirational coaches they too will tell you that in order to achieve the goals you set out for yourself you need to visualize yourself realizing your dreams.  Let me explain why I think it is healthy and beneficial to set new years resolutions for yourself. Goal setting is always a good thing because it focuses your mind on working towards something in your life you want to accomplish.  Having goals in the first place is always good!  I can’t ever see myself retired in the traditional sense.  I will always have something I want to do or skill I want to learn.

Lately I’ve been thinking of finally learning an instrument for my own sense of joy.  And I was inspired by Adam Levine’s take on Purple Rain here to learn how to play the electric guitar.  Do I think I’ll ever play like him?  Doubtful, but it sure will be fun to learn and try!

Think about the things in your life you’ve put on hold for whatever reason and haven’t made the time to start learning or working towards them.  Make a list for 2017 with things you like to see happen this year.  This is not about punishing yourself or getting down if you don’t start them this year – this is about visualizing a dream you’ve had that you just haven’t prioritized yet.  The time is now.  Don’t feel it needs to be perfect, or that the time isn’t right.  Make the time.  Move towards those things that will empower you and make you a happier person. Whether it is something as simple as making more time for friends and family this year, no one but you knows what your goals and dreams are or work as hard as you do to realize them.

One of my favorite quotes from Shakespeare is “All the world ‘s a stage, and all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts”  I tend to look at life much like this.  This life is your life – your stage – how do you want to live it?  Just be sure to have fun along the way!
