Theme: One in a Melon [Watermelon 1st Birthday Party]
I was honored to collaborate with my best friend, Marissa Bell, on her daughters first birthday party. Here is her story of how she came up with this adorable theme one in a melon & how we created the balloon garland. The party was adorable and loved by all!
My husband, Dan loves to grill, he is known for his amazing BBQ so it was a given that whatever theme Everleigh’s 1st birthday party was he’d be providing his culinary gems. I thought of several different themes, all of which were super girly and frilly which, I didn’t feel went well with eating BBQ ribs. While perusing Pinterest I came across a super cute 1st birthday photo shoot of a little girl eating a wedge of watermelon with a sign that said One in a Melon. Duh!!! Watermelon + BBQ + the sweetest 1 year old in July equals a total no brainer.
Nothing is better than having a best friend of 25+ years who loves to DIY and is a party planner. So when I told Lara about the One in a melon theme she was super excited about all the fun and colorful details. Never one to back down from a DIY craft, I shared with her the idea of making the balloon garland for the dessert table. She was equally as pumped as I was, I know punny, right?! Anyway on to the details including the DIY stuff….
Balloon cluster garlands are a hot item being seen all over Blogs, Pinterest and social media. It turned out pretty simple to create with such an incredible impact on the overall party design.
Here is a tutorial on how to create the balloon garland
Materials
1. Quality latex balloons in varying sizes (5 inch,9 inch,12 inch) & colors depending on your theme
2. Balloon decorating strip, we used a 25 foot strip. You can cut yours to the desired length.
3. Air compressor or Hand held air pump
4. Command hooks
5. Bakers Twine
6. Tape
7 Low temp glue gun with glue
Directions:
Step 1. Inflate all your balloons using an air compressor or hand held air pump
Step 2. Insert the largest balloons in the balloon decorating strip. To do this: pull the knot thru one of the holes on the strip. Notice some have smaller holes for different size balloons. You can use random colors or follow a specific color scheme based on your party theme.
Step 3. Once the balloon strip is completely covered you are ready to hang your garland. Adhere command hooks to the surface you plan to hang your balloon garland on. Then tie your balloon garland to the command hook using baker’s twine. Secure by taping bakers twine on hook.
Step 4. Fill in clusters of smaller balloons by using glue from a low temperature glue gun. You will need to hold small balloon to glue for a moment to ensure it adheres
Step 5. You can also add in flowers, branches or other embellishments
Step 6. Step back and admire!!!!
