Creating the Perfect Gallery Wall

 

Have you been wanting to create a gallery wall in your home but not sure where to start?  That was my dilemma for oh, probably three years now, so I figured it was time to commit!  Commit to trying out some fresh ideas but with some guidance.  When Canvas Factory contacted me about collaborating I jumped at the chance as I love the look of photographs on canvas.  Canvas prints are created when an image is printed onto canvas and then stretched or gallery wrapped onto a wooden frame ready for display or hanging. To create a canvas print just upload your photo or image, choose the size and shape of your canvas, finish your order and wait for your photo canvas to be delivered. You can go with a whole wall of canvas prints or just add in a few to your gallery wall.  Here are some ideas to try out and let me know how it works out for you.  Don’t be afraid to mix and match frames, artwork done by your kids and favorite artists and a few fun items you’ve collected throughout the years.  I plan to work on mine this weekend so I’ll be sure to post a picture of the final result!

 

Create Some Order:

Our eyes do like to see some order and this could mean when things are lined up or a set of frames.  An example would be frames lined up on a shelf or in a row on the wall.

Color Coordinate:

Choose a color scheme and stick to it.  But don’t be afraid to mix and match colors that work together – such as a black and white wall with pops of color.  Not sure what colors work together, you can look into color theory but always trust your judgement.  And if you still aren’t sure, have a friend who is good with mixing colors stop by your place to help you assess what works and what doesn’t.  I did this when I was choosing what color to do a couple accent walls and so glad I got a couple opinions! Sometimes it helps to get another opinion from a friend you trust!

Kid Art:

I definitely plan to add in some of my favorite pieces that our daughter has created through the years.  These pieces will look great mixed in with our other artwork and photographs.  Pick up some inexpensive frames at your local discount store and frame your favorites.

“Real” Art: “Real” Art is stuff like the prints you can get from garage or estate sales, antique shops and thrift stores and more. It’s really just an element that you did not make but that was made by someone else. I just think it’s a really great way to show appreciation for other’s work and it adds an element to a gallery wall that gives something more. My “real” art pieces are from one of my favorite artists, Jennifer Mercede, who creates such colorful work!

Natural Elements:

What resonates with you. Is your home decorated with a beach vibe, or do you prefer a more modern look?  All styles fit into the natural element I believe, you just have to find the pieces that work for you.  This one definitely should be interpreted to fit your style. You could put some seashells you’ve collected along a shelf beside some canvas prints.  I love mixing in several pieces to make things more interesting.

Add in Dimension:

Think outside the box and get 3 dimensional with your wall. Anything from clay sculpture to canvas prints of the family to anything that pops out against the wall. You’ll be glad you took the plunge and gave it a chance. My favorite dimensional element is the Japanese paper mache mask that I brought back from my travels in Japan.

Reflective Elements:

Mirrors add so much to a room don’t you think? They bounce light around and add depth to a room. But you can also add reflective elements with metallics and sparkle.  I am absolutely loving the rose gold accents – from fashion to home decor – it is one of my favorite new colors!

 

Mix it up baby!

Art and then more art:

This is a rather interesting corner of the house!  Loving the color of the chair and how they have one large art piece behind the chair and then covered the other wall with art and prints.

Before you start nailing into the wall, be sure to check out the article here on to find how what style most suits you.  They have some great ideas for creating a fantastic gallery wall.  And I plan to use their idea of outlining each of our pieces with brown paper then taping it to the wall to see if we like it.  Then nailing each piece to the wall.
