In the Spotlight :: Carla Renata

If you have thought of getting into the world of acting, or already in the entertainment industry, you just might want to check out Carla Renata new book The Actor’s Guide to Self-Marketing. I have known Carla for several years from press junkets and she is a great person, smart and inspires others to go after their dreams because she is so driven in her own and shows that anything is possible if you work hard and believe in yourself.

She is an actress, online radio personality, and blogging and branding expert. You have most likely heard her voice in commercials and seen her on television! In fact she is the only African-American actress to recur on four network sitcoms in one season.

As a former publicist, she worked on media campaigns for major corporations and non-profits, as well as Grammy, Emmy and Tony-winning artists. She was inspired to write The Actor’s Guide to Self-Marketing after spending years in the entertainment industry where selling one’s personality and image is vital to a successful career. I think her book is a great read for anyone who is in an environment where their personality and image important for their career – which is most professions really.

“The mind is everything. What you think, you will become.” With The Actor’s Guide to Self-Marketing, you’ll be well on your way to becoming the actor you really want to be and landing your dream roles.

~ Carla Renata

With The Actor’s Guide to Self-Marketing, you will learn how to:

  • Highlight unique traits and skills
  • Distinguish yourself from the crowd
  • Market yourself through social media
  • Angle for your dream role

If you aren’t sure what your strong points are or unsure of what makes you unique, Carla offers a great exercise. She suggests to grab five adjectives from the following sources: yourself, a relative, a teacher or mentor, a stranger, and your best friend. She says that you will probably find that three to four adjectives keep popping up. The expression You never have a second chance to make a first impression holds true and if you are in a situation where you want to make your best impression (who doesn’t?!) then it is key to really understand your strong traits. I was telling a couple of friends about this exercise the other night over dinner and it was interesting to hear what each of us said about the other. Try it and let us know what adjectives come up for you!

Renata’s methods have been tested and developed through her branding and social media program, The Branding Buddha, which has been taught online and privately, as well as in group classes at top universities in the United States. Along with tips from her program and extensive background in the field, Renata uses meditative practices and self-actualization to help actors develop their public image and reach their goals with clarity and intention.
