The Sleepover out on Netflix 8/21
In this family adventure-comedy, Clancy (Sadie Stanley) and her kid brother Kevin (Maxwell Simkins) discover that their seemingly normal stay-at-home mom Margot (Malin Åkerman) is actually a former high-end thief in the witness protection program. When both their mom and dad (Ken Marino) are kidnapped and forced to pull one last job with an ex-flame of Margot’s (Joe Manganiello), the siblings must team up to rescue their parents over the course of one action-packed night that they’ll never forget. THE SLEEPOVER is directed by Trish Sie (Pitch Perfect 3).
Last week I had a chance to interview some of the cast from The Sleepover including Ken Marino, Maxwell Simkins, Lucas Jaye, Malin Ackerman, Sadie Stanley and Cree Cicchino. One thing was very apparent from the entire cast – they all had a blast working on this film together. A super cute spy movie that you can watch with your kids!
Q: What was it like working with this cast?
In a word, it was dreamy. Everyone was a true team player. There was so much laughing, brainstorming, collaborating, and playing on set. We had a blast every day. We left time and space for improv and the exploration of ideas that popped up as we went along, which I think makes the movie so much richer, funnier, and more layered. All the actors– adults and kids alike– were so in touch with their characters and truly supportive of each other. It was such a pleasure to watch them work. ~ Trish Sie, Director of The Sleepover
FUN FACTS ABOUT THE SLEEPOVER
- The school scenes were shot in a real school, Hanover High. The real-life principal of the
school is a very cool dude named Matt. He was so game, in fact, that he let us put him in the movie as the on-screen principal who’s having a very serious meeting in the opening montage of the film - Maxwell did the entire opening dance in the school bathroom in one (very long) take. He
actually even helped choreograph the dance!
a. The bathroom dance was shot in the ACTUAL high school bathroom. The bathroom
floor was sterilized FIVE TIMES and no one was allowed to walk on it before he
performed “The Worm” on the floor.
b. Everyone was laughing and loving Kevin’s epic bathroom dance. It took everyone an
extra 15 minutes just to move on. - The actors learned the ENTIRE fight scenes, rather than relying mostly on doubles. They’re all really good athletes and so physical! Even so, these fight scenes are gnarly and the actors have a few battle scars to show for it; Ken injured his hand karate-chopping the vase at the gala, and Malin chipped a tooth head-butting the guard as she’s escaping from her chair. Don’t worry, they are both OK!
