Latest & Greatest :: Ranger Rick Jr. Appventures : Bears

The National Wildlife Federation has released a series of Ranger Rick Jr. Appventures, that include cutting-edge story apps and in each Appventure you are able to explore an interactive photo story, play fun-filled games and create WILD music, animals and pictures.  The interactive storybooks are best suited for ages 4 – 8.

We had a chance to review the newly released Ranger Rick app and I really like how these apps help teach our kids about nature and about respecting wildlife.  The National Wildlife Federation released Ranger Rick Jr. Appventures: Bears that is available today in the app store.  In this app we to travel to Alaska with Ricky Raccoon to meet Gertie the Grizzly and discover how grizzly bears live. This week Ranger Rick is holding a Bear-a-thon that is going on until December 7th on their Facebook page.

The apps starts out with with Ricky Racoon introducing himself and his friend Gertie, a grizzly bear.  Gertie says we should go on an adventure and what should we do?  There are several options to chose from that include: Play, Explore or Create.  I am always game for exploring so my daughter and I started with Exploring.  Here we learn about grizzly bears and Ranger Rick tells us to tap the photo to get started.  There is a real image of a huge grizzly bear whose picture moves across the screen once we touch him.  I have seen a grizzly in person on a trip to Montana years ago and they are HUGE!  Once you touch his picture again the image takes over the whole screen.  The photography found throughout the app is really quite amazing!  Gertie (got to love that name) tells us to look around and tap on her tracks.  When we do that, we are taken to antoher screen and told by Gertie that grizzly bears like to live alone and far from people.  There are other wildlife featured in the app that when touched come out to say hello.

We really enjoyed the feature that allows you to move the screen back and forth (you are told to move the iPad back and forth) and you get to see a whole bunch of grizzly bears moving around and looking back at you.  At any time you can take a picture of what you are seeing and save it to look at later.  There are several games to play that include playing some music with the owl and Ranger Rick:

And you can go fishing with Gertie where you are timed while you see how many fish you can help Gertie catch!

And my daughter had a blast creating her own animal.  If you want to add some wings and antlers to the fox – go right ahead!  This is a fun and silly game but it helps to teach children about the different body parts and opens the discussion about what animal we would most likely see these parts on.  For example, we talked about the American Eagle and how they have such a huge wing span.  And how antlers will help protect animals such as moose from predators.
