Getting Organized Step by Step

Love this terrarium from Organic Designs by Aggelige!

One of the resolutions I made for this year is to get more organized and to get my house decluttered.  Our place is not that big and piles of something always make their appearance each day.  Whether they be school papers and homework from my daughter, bills and mail on the kitchen countertop, or my work papers on the kitchen table, I feel it is a never ending battle.  Plus throw in the equation that I am not one of those Born Organizers as the Flylady tagged as women who just know how to get and keep it all organized.  You probably have some of those friends – you know the one’s whose house looks picture perfect any time you stop off at their place – and that’s with small kids even!  But how do they do that I think in my head!

So we offered the Modern Parents Messy Kid’s Organize Your ENTIRE Life eBook and pdf kit for two of our lucky readers and will announce those winners soon.  I hope that this plan helps you in your journey of getting more organized.  Because I do feel there is a connection to less stuff + less to worry about = a calmer mind and state of being. This past weekend I spent decluttering our kitchen countertops and living room area and even added in some pieces I really like.  A few years back I found an amazing tansu chest on eBay of all places.  It is a great piece but was looking too crowded with all the different colored and sized frames sitting on top of it. So I cleared off the family pictures (I plan to organize them onto the wall for a more modern look), placed some antique Japanese teapots I had hidden in the back of the tansu, and to top it off, found this absolutely gorgeous succulent terriarium at a local shop called Organic Designs by Aggeligie who designs each of the plants into a beautiful display of nature at her best.  She  includes findings from her nature walks such as beautiful bird feathers, rocks, driftwood and other gorgeous things from the earth.  This is the first step in my decluttering stage – filter out and keep only what I love!  The rest will be donated, sold or given to those who might want these items.  I decided on the living room area and kitchen because that is where we spend the most time, but do choose the room you feel you most want to get organized.

Take Your First Step:

Here’s to taking your first step.  Pick a room that you and your family spend a lot of time in.  Look at each piece in that room and really think about whether it is just taking up space or do you really love it.  Keep only those pieces you really want.  If you are unsure about it – put it away in a box in the garage for a month and if you don’t miss it during that time – it can be either gifted to a friend or donated (or sold!).  Less really is more and the less you have up on shelves, mantles, the more you can appreciate each piece.  Let’s work on getting organized together.  This is STEP 1 – I just finished our living room and kitchen table area – your turn!  I have lots more to do – like the dark dungeon under our kitchen cabinets but I am taking baby steps people! Keep us posted on how it is going for you!

Doesn’t my tansu chest look great!  Remember less clutter = a happy mind!
