Inspirational Mom :: Jackie Shapiro of French Bull

Back in the early 2000’s, my very stylish girlfriend introduced me to the French Bull line.  I fell in love with her polka dot round platter she was using at a dinner party.  I was sold right then and there!  I was fortunate to find the same multidot platter at a cute little boutique in Laguna Beach and she gave me this one for a Christmas present.  I use it every night to put our fruit on for dinner and at pretty much every party we host.  The products are really durable and I have had mine for years!

The French Bull line is just so happy and colorful I just can’t get enough of it!  A friend of mine even puts her platters out for display in her modern home.  They really are that great!  FRENCH BULL’s debut in January of 2002 marked the return of melamine but with a modern spin. As a worldwide leader in design they have extended to more than 25 countries, including Brazil, Australia, Israel, South Korea, Hong Kong, UK, Canada and Europe through over 5,000 retailers. French Bull’s mastery of pattern and color has come to life and extends from the kitchen to the bedroom, fun dishware for children and sophisticated serving items for adults. The brand has partnered with an array of like-minded manufactures to expand their constantly growing vision with  lap top covers, lunch bags, beverage carriers, gift bags, greeting cards, and stationery. I think their toaster is on my Santa List this year!  I had a chance to speak to the woman who created the company, Jackie Shapiro, about her inspiration and what’s on the horizon for the company.

Tell us what inspired you to create French Bull?

I had two children and was designing clothes and traveling too much.  So I started making patterns and was selling them to some very recognizable brands.  Walking around New York City I was seeing my work all over.  So I decided I had to do something and it was French Bull.
The products all are so colorful – have you always been attracted to color?  Where do you find inspiration for your designs?

My inspiration comes from all over.  Music with a strong backbeat and non-drug induced psychedelia –  Alfonse Mucha, Hapshash and the Coloured Coat, Sister Corita, Beatrize Milhazes. Innocent Pop icons like the Archies, Laugh In or the Batman television series. Take a look at Aakash Nihalani graffiti – I think it’s lovely.
I have the polka dot serving set that given as a gift.  I love how playful and fun it is.  What two words describe your company.  And what two words describe yourself?

Thank you, it’s all about playful and fun at French Bull.  Two words?  You couldn’t make it easy and ask me to write a book?  Two words, “Live Vivid”.
How do you balance your work life and home life?  If a woman is looking to start her own company, what advice would you give her?
I don’t see a difference between the advice I’d give a woman or a man.  The advice would be, just keep going.
Any news you want to share with our lovely dandelion moms?
Not sure if it’s really news, but I invited a bunch of family members and friends over for Thanksgiving this year.  My favorite response was from my cousin that said  “We will definitely be there and so will my parents and my brother.  I am relieved not to host!!, I’ll cook!” I don’t really cook, but love to entertain at home so her response to me was win win.  I use our products everyday, but having guests really gives me a chance to use French Bull for what I think is it’s best use.
Celebrating happy moments with your family and friends creating memories.
Is that too corny?  – it’s how I feel.
