Dwell :: TIDY to the Rescue!

A few weeks back I received an adorable mailer from a new company called TIDY.  I love this concept and just had to find out more about this cleaning service that provides house cleaning options for busy families.  For example, if you want a cleaning person to only tidy up one or two areas in your house before your next party – they will do that for only $40.  I like that the services can range from a quick pick up to a very intense top-to-bottom cleaning service where everything in your home is dusted off, cleaned up and sparkly when you come home.

I wanted to find out who was behind this rather genius idea!  I always love the backstory on companies or products I think are interesting.  It turns out a young woman who use to work in the hotel industry, Kristen Schmitt, came up with this idea because she saw a need to offering services that are sorely missing in the industry.  Because she worked in client services at The Ritz Carlton, she knew the importance of providing quality customer service to the hotel guests.  She wanted to bring this to people’s homes and have them feel that after a TIDY cleaning service, they are walking into a home that not only has been cleaned well, but customer’s will find little touches like their beds made perfectly like what you find at a 5 Star Hotel and little bottles of water and mints on their bathroom counter.

Loved how they fluffed the cushions!

It really did feel like I was walking into a new home with these added touches after Kristen was kind enough to provide me with a Mighty TIDY cleaning session that includes two people over 4 hours who clean your home top to bottom.

It was so fun coming home to a clean house (and I would hire them every day if I could) and loved the little touches.  I have to say my old sofa never looked so good!  The pillows are fluffed like what you see in a fancy hotel – love it!

It was so much fun finding these goodies on my bathroom counter!

And the mints and little bottles of water was so nice to see on our master bathroom counter.  Kristen talked with me about how every employee must go through a TIDY certification where they learn how to effectively and quickly clean a home.  They even use different color cloths for different rooms in the house.  What a great idea that I want to adopt into my own housecleaning.

I had a chance to speak to Kristen about her company and what advice she would give other aspiring business owners. You can also see Kristen in an interview talking about TIDY and how she came up with the idea here.

What inspired you to start TIDY:
I have always been obsessed with service and the details hotels deliver to make a guest feel special. Beginning with my time at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company and in other roles reviewing hotel guest experiences, I was inspired by the little details that make an impact. Like the way a towel is folded by the bath, fresh cut roses on a side table or how a duvet is tucked in tight when you enter a room. A big, fragmented market of home cleaning revealed the need for a sophisticated yet affordable home cleaning experience. I thought, why isn’t there a Ritz-Carlton of home cleaning? We all love and expect reliable, high quality service when we are out and about socially, why not at home?
TIDY was also started to give people back valuable time. There was a recent statistic that women spend on average an extra hour on chores a day, while also often working and caring for children too. It’s difficult to keep up which is why a lot of our clients are career woman, busy moms and families who want to spend their free time together on more important things.
What are some steps you would recommend they take to start their own business?
The most powerful step you can take, after you have a solid idea you are passionate about and have conducted research to prove demand in the market, is go. Move ahead quickly and take action. Don’t get hung up on getting everything perfect. Speed is important and your audience of users will provide valuable feedback along the way. As long as you have a solid game plan and a product or service that is authentic, get it out there and build as you go.
Gather as much data as you possibly can and track everything. Constantly iterate and make changes quickly. Depending on your business, you will learn fairly instantly in the form of users or anecdotal feedback whether or not you are getting traction.
Most importantly, it should be fun. If you are doing something you love, no matter how hard you are working, it should feel like something you want to be doing! Passion is so important.
What are some other home services you are likely to offer clients in the future?
At the moment, keeping our clients’ homes clean and styled, getting to know how they like things done and improving at this is our first priority. In the future, I would love to expand the service deeper into the home to save our client’s even more time and energy and truly be their trusted advocate for other areas of home-keeping, but for the time being we are content TIDYing homes.
Thank you Kristen for providing this great service for busy moms!  And good news!  She is proving one lucky local dandelion mom a TIDY Plus $80 Cleaning Service!  Good Luck!
