A few months ago I took my eight year old to see McFarland USA and we both absolutely loved it!  I appreciate that this is a true story about kids who worked hard to achieve their dreams.  And that their coach helped them realize dreams they didn’t even know they had yet.  I used this movie and their stories to talk with my daughter about hard work, determination and going after one’s dreams.  This true story features high school kids who grew up working in the fields before school and then after school leaving them little time for much else.  They had to do this to help out their families and did so willingly.

It was wonderful to see the coaches (played by Kevin Costner) transformation as he learns about the Hispanic culture.  From getting a chicken as a house-warming gift from his new neighbor to his new appreciation for the close-knit community, we see a heart-warming transformation in him.  It is such an inspirational movie, it is one of my absolute favorites from the year.

About McFarland USA:

In the tradition of Disney sports movies comes “McFarland, USA” based on a true story of underdogs triumphing over tremendous obstacles. This heartwarming drama follows novice runners who strive to build a cross-country team under Coach Jim White (Kevin Costner) in their predominantly Latino high school. Everyone has a lot to learn about each other, but when Coach realizes the boys’ exceptional running ability, things change. Beyond their talent, it’s the power of family, commitment to each other and work ethic that transform them into champions — helping them achieve their own American dream.

You will be cheering for these hard-working boys throughout the movie.  And it can be used to demonstrate to your own children about the importance of hard work, determination and just going for it!  I think you’ll family will love it as much as we did!
