In the Spotlight: Best Fiends Keeps You Entertained

Fiend (Noun) [/Feend/]: “A Mythical, mischievous little creature inhabiting the world of Minutia.”

You probably remember the scene in Gladiator when Russell Crowe’s character yells to the crowd “are you not entertained?”  That line kept going through my mind while playing the very popular app Best Fiends by developer Seriously.  Yes, seriously, that is their name and one my daughter got a kick out of since this is one of her favorite words these days!  I have to say I was very entertained playing this game!

 

 

One of the reasons I think Best Fiends is so popular is because of the funny background story of the Best Fiends and their nemesis Slugs of Mount Boom. Here an excerpt from their website:

From the Green Glades to the foothills of Mount Boom, the small creatures of Minutia lived in harmony, until the night the meteor struck…

The meteor smashed into Mount Boom, bringing with it a strange force that transformed the Slugs who lived there into an army of greedy, greenery-gobbling pests.

Now, the Slugs are taking over the world, munching a path through Minutia and sliming up everything they touch!

If you are a fan of games and puzzles I think you might become addicted to Best Fiends.  My daughter and I played the game together and of course, her eight year old brain was much quicker than good ‘ol mom at seeing the patterns but I got the hang of it pretty quickly.  And now I am… addicted.  In fact, I had a tough time finishing this post because I kept trying to get to the next level between writing my post and playing!

 

As you advance through the game and visit different realms, challenges arise while you are trying to conquer the invaders.  One of the features I really like about this game is if you don’t win a level you can try that level again until you make it through to the next stage.  You are told at the beginning of each game how many items you need to collect and how many slugs you need to attack.  Here is the Gameplay trailer which will give you an idea of the battle you need to help the Best Fiends win!

The Best Fiends:

I am always a sucker for a good story and this game is pretty funny and entertaining. The characters are really cute in a otherworldly kind of way –  and it is fun figuring out what their superpowers are.  Like this guy – his name is Bob and he lives in the strawberry patch.  He is a tad grumpy and is trying to get back to his family’s aphid farm and if he has to take out a few slugs to get there – well, so be it!  Their website describes each of the Best Fiends and their backstory and I must say all of their stories are very funny! Games like this are a great way to decompress but at the same time can be challenging. The team behind Best Fiends are talk about their creative process and behind the scenes here.

 

The Slugs:

The Slugs are quite the characters.  The aren’t necessarily evil  but they are a bit selfish and they are devouring everything in their path and are a menace to Minutia.  Ever since the Meteor hit they have been acting strangely so the Best Fiends must stop them – with your help!
