A Grand Ole Cake on the 4th of July!

The Fourth of July is a huge deal in our household. It’s probably right up there with Thanksgiving and Halloween. About two months ago, my husband, who never ever emails me, sent me a cake recipe for the 4th of July. He never ever asks me for anything, so this was a big deal. Needless to say, I was up for the challenge. My husband went so far as emailing the recipe for it, so I just had to do it. He requested for an American Flag cake, one which upon slicing, are slices of Old Glory herself!

Due to time restraints, I decided to use boxed white cake. I baked them the night before. I used 3 boxes total, for a total of 6-9′ cakes. One box I baked as directed. The second box, I added about a tablespoon of red icing gel and baked as directed. The third, I added about a tablespoon of blue icing gel and baked as directed.

Once all the cakes cooled, I cut the white and red 9″ cakes in half horizontally, resulting into two thin layers per color. Be very careful! I actually used dental floss to cut the cakes into two thinner cakes.

With the blue cakes, I wrapped one up and placed in the freezer for future use, then took the other blue cake and cut a 4″ hole in the center using a coffee mug. You can certainly use a 4″ biscuit cutter as well. Remove the 4″ round cake and store in freezer for future use. You should end up with one 9″round blue donut shaped cake.

Do the same with one each of the thinner white and red cakes, but save the donut shapes and keep the 4″ layers out.

Make the buttercream frosting, (refer to link mentioned earlier) and set aside.

Now it’s ready to be iced! From the bottom, use a white layer, spread buttercream, then layer with a red, and continue till you get to the blue donut shaped caked.

Place the blue donut shaped cake on top, then place a white 4″ cake in the center, place a bit of buttercream on top, then place the red 4″ cake on top of it. Make sure to press a bit in the center so that the cakes are all aligned. Ice the entire cake and then it’s ready to be served!

When we presented it to our guests, it was like a huge fireworks display. The ‘Oohs’ and the ‘Ahhs’ resonated throughout the house was joyful! I guarantee it will add more spark to your Fourth of July. It sure made my husband happy! He loved it and so will you. Enjoy!
