5 Tips to Successful Yard Sale Shopping

We all love a good bargain.  And one can often be found at yard sales (or garage sales).  But how can we make the most of our yard sale shopping trips?  Here are a few tips that may help:

1.      Make a list – What types of items are you looking for?  You can tailor your shopping trip by looking for yard sales that advertise what is on your list.  Keep in mind sizes for kids’ clothes, ages for toys.  Household items can often be found in good condition too.  List everything on a small card that you can carry in your pocket.  This way you have it handy when you need it.

2.      Have a budget – By using a list and keeping in mind the amount you are willing to spend for the day you won’t end up impulse buying.  A good way to prevent overspending is to only carry the amount of cash you have budgeted.  Leave your debit card at home so there is no temptation to pick up more cash.  If there is an amazing deal that you just can’t pass up and it doesn’t fit into the budget for the day, see if the owner will hold it until later in the day for you.  But really think about whether or not you really need that item first.

3.      Plan your attack – Find out where the local yard sales in your area will be this weekend and plan a route so you aren’t just driving all over town.  I like to start my errand trips with the farthest point and work my way home.  You can find local listings on Craigslist and local papers often have ads too.

4.      Get there early – If the yard sale starts at 8am you may want to get there before that.  The yard sale “pros” all start out very early to snap up the best items and deals.

5.      Finally, negotiate – Most people hosting a yard sale are trying to make room for something else.  They want a good price but are also willing to work with you.  This is especially true nearer the end of the sale.  I know, I said get there early.  But if they don’t want to haul the remaining items to Goodwill you may get a good deal near the end of the day.

Well, making a list of stuff that you are looking to buy is the main key factor that should be followed by all those people who are going to attend any yard sale shopping. These tips are really very useful.
