Medical treatment can be a difficult process and challenging which requires different areas of care. One particular complex area in medical healing is pharmaceuticals and prescription medications. Most if not all drugs come with some side effects, typically minor. However, you will run across those drugs that do indeed cause side effects and even more, weird ones. Below are 4 weird prescription drug side effects.

Blue Urine

Urine color change is not unusual. For instance, when you consume beets, your urine could possibly turn pink in color and while taking vitamins, it can turn orange. However, have you ever experienced blue or green urine? You just might if you take Elavil, which is an antidepressant as well Indocin a popular pain reliever. Also, Flagyl which is an antibiotic might even turn your urine black.

Adds on Pounds

How would you feel if a medication you were prescribed had you gain over 20 pounds in just 3 months? Studies have shown that some people while on Zyprexa, a bipolar disorder medication, experienced just that. Some medications, like Paxil that are used for the treatment of depression, have been known to cause weight gain. Birth control pills, steroids, diabetes medications, and hormone replacement therapies are other drugs than can pack the pounds.

Amnesia

Although it is really rare to experience total amnesia, certain medications can cause amnesia. Mirapex is one of those medications. It was made in 1997 for controlling symptoms of RLS or Restless Leg Syndrome and Parkinson’s disease. It does come with a few side effects, with amnesia being one of them. Short-term memory loss was report by some patients, and they stated they were unable to remember what they did the previous day. The problem was eliminated by going off the prescription. These side effects can also be experienced with patients who are taking statins, which are used for lowering cholesterol. A former astronaut, known as Duane Graveline, stated while taking Lipitor, he came back from a brief walk and did not recognize his wife. After this, all memories of things that happened beyond his graduation from high school were lost.

Activities While Sleeping

A popular insomnia drug, Ambien is another drug that comes with a weird side effect. Although it is effective in what it does, after closer inspection, it has been observed to do just a bit more than help you sleep. After taking this drug, you might just find yourself climbing out of bed while sleeping and doing things you are unaware of doing. The following morning, you might not remember doing any of it. Some activities reported to have happened were sleep driving, eating food, having sex, talking on the phone and walking around.

Although it is not uncommon to experience side effects when taking prescription medication, it is best if you discuss them with your doctor before starting your medication.  This will prepare you for any “weird” scenarios you might find yourself in from taking the drugs.
