”We shape our homes and then our homes shape us.”

Writer and art historian Cara Greenberg coined the phrase ‘Mid-Century Modern’ in 1984 – it was the title of her seminal book about what has since become a global and iconic design movement. The label is to-the-point and no-nonsense, much like the straightforward interior style, which championed notions of functionality, ease and modern simplicity.(Source: AnotherMag.com)

For years now, my obsession with mid century chairs is a bit of a joke in our house. I have a hard time walking by a mid century chair in a thrift store, garage and estate sales. My dream is to come across a legendary Eames Lounge Chair at a reasonable price. Wishful thinking, but a girl can dream! Designed by Charles and Ray Eames in 1956, there was nothing like it, and there is still nothing to equal it. It has never been out of production and now sells for upwards of $5,700!

If you love mid century design, but don’t want to pay the high prices for designer pieces, check online for replicas. I found our Eames Lounge Chair replica on Craig’s list and think I paid around $100 for it! Home design doesn’t have to break the bank. Here are some of our favorite mid century designs and recommended books. And if you love decorating with mid century art, check out our post on best places to quality art at a discount here.
