Take a Trip Back in Time with The Medieval Times Show

Last week I was contacted by the crew over at The Medieval Times to see if I would like to check out the show in Buena Park.  I had not seen the show yet which is surprising since I have lived in Orange County most of my life (minus my college years and traveling).  My seven year old was so excited to see real knights on horses fighting and jousting.    A brand new show opened up this year and celebrates the California Castle’s 25th anniversary, The Medieval Times 30th anniversary, and its recent $2.5 renovation.  We arrived just as the show was about to begin, but I would recommend to come at least an half hour earlier to see the horses in their stables, enjoy an appetizer at the bar or look at all the fun paraphernalia such as Knight armor that can be found throughout.  You can even get a family portrait with everyone in costume.

The opening scene was magnificent and dramatic.  One of the most beautiful white horses I have ever seen entered into a cloudy arena with rather ominous music in the background.  He is known as a Spanish PRE horse and the Andalusian, also known as the Pure Spanish Horse or PRE (Pura Raza Española), is a horse breed from the Iberian Peninsula, where its ancestors have lived for thousands of years. He performed some wonderful tricks and seemed to really enjoy the show he is putting on.  Immediately, we are asked if we would like a beverage and served a very delicious tomato bisque.  The entire meal is served utensil free so you can just image how much fun my daughter and her friend had grubbing without utensils.  The food was actually very tasty and I loved the soup and chicken.  All are served on metal plates like what you would have eaten on in the 11th century.

As I mentioned it took almost two years for the creators to develop this new live production and they have included even more audience favorites such as live jousting, sword fights, horsemanship and falconry. Guests are taken back in time and encouraged to cheer for one of six “Knights of the Realm,” named after historic regions of medieval Spain.  We were seated in the Yellow and Red Knights corner and cheered him on all night!  My daughter even caught one of the carnations thrown up in the crowd by our knight!

 

 

 

Princess Katelynn provided a very exciting addition to the show with her pet falcon who flew across the heads of many in the crowd.  We were sitting high up in the arena so he flew over our heads several times.  I swear we could see every feather on his stomach he came so close!  That was very exciting! In addition to a new story, the production includes new lighting, choreography and battle scenes, costumes, new horse dressage elements, and a new musical score custom created for Medieval Times and recorded in Kiev, Ukraine.  The action scenes were very entertaining and the storyline was easy to follow.  My daughter and her friend were really getting into it and cheering for our special Knight in Armor.

 

My husband kept commenting about what great horsemen the knights were.  The show they put on was quite impressive.  The battle scenes were great fun to watch and the costumes – well, let’s just say you feel like you have been taken back in time to a real jousting and sword fighting event.  We loved it and so did the rest of the crowd.  The audience were really getting into it and during the show I happened to look over at a dad who was there with his two young children and wife and I swear I could see the younger version of himself (as a boy) cheering on his favorite knight.

All in all, we had a wonderful time and are happy to have some tickets for the Buena Park location show courtesy of The Medieval Times crew.  This is a great way to spend a birthday, family get-together, or just hanging out with some friends for the night.  There was a good mix of families and groups of friends at the show so it really is appropriate for all age groups – for the young and young-at-heart.
