Making Your Garden a Little More Homely

Getting started on your garden can seem like a hassle at first. It takes some adjustment to your schedule and learning that you now have a living thing to take care of. In fact it can be a lot like a pet, except you have pet trees, vines, and flowers. And just like any pet that needs a terrarium, you should also consider the habitat and atmosphere that your garden creates and also learn how to shape it. That is where garden decoration comes in, doing the things beyond your original layout or the ‘bones’ of your garden.

And there are hundreds of different ways to properly decorate your garden, that only end by how well you can imagine them (or find ioon Pinterest). But if you are really looking for that deep comfort in your garden then consider crafting your garden around how you design your home. And here are a few good tips to help you flesh out the bones of your garden to make it more homely.

Consider Old Furniture

Really anything in your house that is previously cluttering it up could be used up in your garden if you just think of a crafty way for its use; something as simple as pulling out an old chair or couch and tossing a furniture cover or flashy piece of fabric over it can provide a splash of color, normally lacking from your plants, while also including an effective means of relaxation. Some people have even removed the upholstery from furniture and replaced it with potted plants or moss, giving practical use to the old furniture as well as incredibly unique texture.

In the same vein, anything you have in your house that is old can be effective, an extra drawer can be used for potted plants, large vases with a slab of stone on top can create a make-shift table. The key here is to look at what you already have in your house, and think about how it might be used in a garden, whether it is just sitting down or serving as a lattice for creeping vines. And think about the less permanent things too, you can have a party with some bottles of wine, drink them then use the wine bottles as means for wind chimes or even creating an outdoor chandelier.

Stay Simple

Far too many people try to get incredibly extravagant with their garden designs. This isn’t a bad thing, but chances are you won’t end up finishing everything for your design, even with a lot of extra time spent in the garden. Instead consider a simple layout or your ‘bones’ of the garden and then learn to expand simple things on to that further. If you do want to go for an elaborate scheme for your garden, then think of it in project sections that will still look good on their own but is something you can achieve in a single session.

Also, it is important to make sure you stick to a specific color scheme. Don’t be afraid to experiment with your colors, since nature itself comes in many different schemes that can sometimes be hard to match. But try to stick to only a couple colors to start, and then work to adding in some more later on if you want when you have a better grasp of how colors in nature work and clash.

As a side note, you also want to keep things simple so that your garden is also manageable, because the garden is a living entity, it will grow and change over time, and you need to be aware of the kind of maintenance you’ll have to perform for each additional thing you add to your garden.

Aim for a Room

When making our garden homely, what better option than turning part of your garden into an actual room? This is especially effective if you actually have the space to do it, and if you are one to enjoy your time outside, even if it is just reading, you can create your own room away from your normal room. Simple things like an awning with a bed under it can serve that duty, while also providing bonuses, like using the pole posts of the bed and awning for creeping plants. You’ll create a manageable overgrown wonderland, in essence and a persistent outdoor home. Just remember to use outdoor friendly fabrics.

Endless Possibilities

Remember to draw on your own ideas, taking a few from Pinterest or Gardening magazines is great, but the point of this garden being decorated is to show off your personality in it, just like you would with the indoors of your home. But to close out, you have to remember the most crucial thing for garden designing, run with a main attraction to your garden, as if it were a theme park, are your rose bushes the best thing you have? Then showcase them and build your design around them.

You’ll end up with something truly great then.
