Earn a FREE Book in the PBS Kids and Pottery Barn Kids “Summer Reading Challenge”

    June 6, 2014 /

You know what a big fan I am of PBS Kids programming, but you might not know how much I devoured the Pottery Barn Kids catalogue when my daughter was in the womb to get ideas for her nursery!  They have such great design ideas and the quality of their products are pretty fantastic!  So the collaboration between PBS Kids and Pottery Barn Kids with their Summer Reading Challenge is a great fit!  PBS Kids is committed to providing resources and suggestions to promote summer reading. “Research shows that children experience significant learning loss when they do not participate in educational activities during the summer months, and that loss is…

‘In barely more than a generation, video games transformed from a diversion for the few into a mass medium, helping people live, learn, work, and of course, play.    ~ The Entertainment Software Association   It’s been a few years now that game sales ($24 billion) have outpaced movie box office sales (just $10 billion per year), but now games are a serious competitor to the entire TV/film industry with game play now eating into even mainstays like television viewing.  I know my daughter prefers to play games or watch her favorite shows on our tablets.  It is interesting how technology has changed the way children watch TV programming…

Take Some Mom Time and Recharge This Summer

    June 3, 2014 /

Parenting may be a 24/7 gig, but taking time out for yourself helps keep you strong for your family. Some of the ways I like to take some time for myself include taking a nature walk, getting massages, playing at the beach, lunch with some friends and watching some choice shows at the end of the night really helps me decompress from my busy days.  I look forward to catching up with some of my favorite characters, like Mr. Selfridge, Sherlock, Don Draper and many more. Every month as part of the Stream Team, Netflix sends me ideas on popular shows the family might enjoy – and is usually…

The Art of Caring: 7 Tips for Helping Others During a Difficult Time

    June 2, 2014 /

Image courtesy of Flickr Grief is like the ocean; it comes on waves ebbing and flowing.  Sometimes the water is calm, and sometimes it is overwhelming.  All we can do is learn to swim. ~ Vicki Harrison   I have wanted to write this post for awhile but it has been one I had a hard time writing because it is all still so painful.  A few months back my father passed away at the age of 67 on the golf course (midswing no less) of a massive heart attack.  The friends he was playing with tried to revive him and the golf course staff even brought out one of those heart…

The APMA “First Steps” Campaign Helps Keep Kids’ Feet Healthy and Happy

    May 30, 2014 /

Did you know that April was Foot Health Awareness Month? I love how each month there is some type of awareness campaign!  But I do like to talk about feet – let me tell you why! When I was in second grade, our neighbor noticed that I was walking pigeon toed and mentioned this to my mother.  It just so happened that her husband was a podiatrist so he checked out my feet.  He recommended that my mother put saddle shoes on my feet at night (on opposite feet) to help fix this problem.  I do remember that it hurt but I am so thankful that the problem was addressed early…
