Father’s Day Shopping Tips: Gift Ideas for Every Dad

    June 3, 2013 /

Sonora Dodd of Spokane, Washington came up with the idea for a day to celebrate her father, William Smart, in 1909, according to the U.S.. Census Bureau. Apparently, she thought of it after hearing a Mother’s Day sermon. Her young widowed father was also a civil war veteran and a local farmer. After his wife’s death, he raised all six of his children on the farm by himself. The nation’s first Father’s Day was held on June 17, 1910, the same month as Sonora Dodd’s father’s birthday. The mayor of Spokane announced the official first Father’s Day celebration. In 1966, President Johnson established Father’s Day on the third Sunday…

Instagram of the Week :: Meet “Earl” the Staghorn Fern

    June 2, 2013 /

My Love Affair with Staghorn Ferns: The first Staghorn Fern I came across was years ago at a good friends housewarming party.  Her family had recently purchased a home that had the most amazing plant hanging from the side of their gazebo.  I was instantly smitten and set about finding out more about this exotic plant.  I found out it was a Staghorn Fern and thus started my love affair with this tropical plant.  Fast forward a few years and my husband and I were moving into our first house and when I came across the largest Staghorn Fern I had ever seen (2 x 2 feet) at an estate…

Helping Your Family Cope with Robbery

    June 1, 2013 /

Whether it happens in the middle of the night or while vacationing far away, there are few events that can shatter the comfort of your home as badly as a criminal invasion – especially if it involves violence or an extensive loss of property. Every person responds to tragedy in their own way, and nobody can predict how long emotional recovery from such an event can be. But there are several things you can do to make sure that your family is…

Ask the Doctor: Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) 101

    May 31, 2013 /

Ask the Doctor: Question: I sometimes have acid reflux, which is horrible. What is it and how can I prevent it? Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), acid reflux or reflux esophagitis  is a condition when the contents of the stomach regurgitates ( leaks) back into the esophagus and causes an burning irritation – due to some acid and the digestive enzyme pepsin – in the esophagus. Let’s step back and talk about the anatomy and physiology.  Digestion begins in the mouth with chewing and the secretion of saliva. Both break down foods in order to allow easy swallowing and help the stomach with food breakdown. Once the food…

Money :: Saving On Summer Fun

    May 30, 2013 /

Saving On Summer Fun Those long, hot, lazy days are just around the corner.  Have you planned how your family will spend them?  Maybe more importantly, have you figured out the cost of your plans?    There are about two months of days to fill during summer time off from school and kids want to be entertained every waking hour.  No matter the size of your family, entertainment can be costly.  With the average price of a movie ticket around $10 a family of four can expect to pay nearly $100 for a trip to the theater.  I chose the movie theater example because it was a lower cost example…
