A Time of Reflection and Planning for the New Year
It seems like this year has gone by in a blur. There were so many wonderful things that we celebrated together as a family – like my daughter starting first grade, learning how to read, finishing her first YMCA triathlon for kids and has the medal hanging in her room that she likes to show anyone who comes to visit, to getting a new family dog. We are attempting to teach him that he is a dog and not a human as he so thinks. When I look back at the photo’s I took on my iPhone over the past year, I realize we really did have a great time…

Reflections :: Imagination as Practice
Depth psychologists believe and even study something called the imaginal realm. The imaginal realm exists in every one of us. It communicates through symbols. It is an active, healthy part of human relating. Ever get a song stuck in your head, or see an image on your mind screen when someone is telling you a story? Those are symbols, the mouthpiece of the imaginal realm. The imaginal realm is precisely the way our intuition, our inner mysterious nature that infuses us with power and spark, reverence and awe, speaks. Neuroscience calls it right hempisphere brain functioning: intuition, inner guidance, creativity, empathy. I call it Soul. As I continue…

Latest & Greatest :: Pigeon Presents… Mo on the Go App!
By now most everyone on the planet has heard of Mo Williams classic tales! Three of Willems’ books have been awarded a Caldecott Honor: Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! (2004), Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale (2005), and Knuffle Bunny Too: A Case of Mistaken Identity (2008).[10] Recently he has been creating the Elephant and Piggie books, an early reader series about a friendly elephant and pig. Elephant and Piggie books won the Theodor Seuss Geisel Medal in 2008 and 2009, and Geisel Honors in 2011, 2012, and 2013.[11] In 2010, Willems introduced a new series of books featuring Cat the Cat, also aimed at early readers. In the Spotlight :: Kathy Kinney of Mrs.P Be-a-Famous Writer Contest
This is my third year supporting the Mrs. P Be-A-Famous-Writer Contest that children across the country can enter for a chance to have their winning story beautifully illustrated and published into a real-live book! Promoting a love of reading and writing is one of my passions because books have been such a part of my life. There are so many magical worlds just ready to draw you in – you just pick up the book and read it. Think about your own favorite book as a child and think about why it was your favorite childhood book. I loved Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell and would daydream about…

Parenting :: Safe from the Summer Slide
You have definitely heard these two warm weather catch phrases: summer reading and summer slide. Nationwide, in both educational and literacy circles, parents, teachers, librarians and elected officials discuss ways in which to keep children actively learning throughout the summer months, especially as it relates to reading and math. There is definitely something to be said for the idea of keeping the brain active and not wanting kids to “forget” all of the skills they learned during their 180 days spent in school (as a stay-at-home mom for many years, I can relate…insert “mommy brain”). The amazing part to me…study after study reveals the same thing. And the…

Inspirational Mom :: WordGirl Creator Dorothea Gillim
I love how life can be so serendipitous (a word you would find on WordGirl). While walking to breakfast at the PBS annual meeting that I attended this month as part of their PBS Kids Ambassador Program, I happened to be walking next to a woman who was also going to breakfast. We started talking and turns out she is the Executive Producer of Curious George but she explained that her “baby” is WordGirl. I literally stopped in my tracks as we are big fans of WordGirl! I told her how my sister-in-law dressed up my niece as Captain Huggyface and her older daughter as WordGirl one year for Halloween. It was…
