7 Tips for a Pet-Friendly Home
My entire life, minus my college years, has been spent sharing a home with at least one pet. Over the years I have discovered that some fabrics and home decor work better than others when you have furry critters. Here are some tips given by pet expert Julia Szabo and Chicago interior designer Nan Ruvel, who designs pet-friendly interiors for clients. “The key is choosing the right materials and accommodating your animals’ needs,” says author of Animal House Style: Designing a Home to Share With Your Pets Julia Szabo, who shares her home with a dozen rescued dogs and cats. Julie says an animal-friendly house is more comfortable for humans too.…

Dwell :: Decorating with Mid Century Chairs
”We shape our homes and then our homes shape us.” ~ Winston Churchill Writer and art historian Cara Greenberg coined the phrase ‘Mid-Century Modern’ in 1984 – it was the title of her seminal book about what has since become a global and iconic design movement. The label is to-the-point and no-nonsense, much like the straightforward interior style, which championed notions of functionality, ease and modern simplicity.(Source: AnotherMag.com) For years now, my obsession with mid century chairs is a bit of a joke in our house. I have a hard time walking by a mid century chair in a thrift store, garage…

Tips for Buying and Displaying Art in Your Home
Images courtesy of Fenton and Fenton. When I think back to the type of art I grew up around I realize that my parents would usually hang abstract images. Nothing too fancy, they definitely weren’t art collectors, but when I came across two pieces on eBay, my parents owned I understood that my attraction to abstract work stems from way back when. But don’t get me wrong, I love art in all it’s forms! Art really does help finish a home. Spend a little time finding out what you love to see everyday and brings you joy. Tips for Spending Quality Time with the Family
We like to enjoy a family night-in about once a week. Usually it falls on a Friday or Saturday night and it’s a great time for us to spend time together, whether we are playing board games, cards (my daughter is extremely lucky… ) or watching a movie together, I do treasure these moments as I anticipate it might get harder to have my soon-to-be teenager to want to “hang with the parents.” I think though that teens, especially teens, still need this family time to reconnect and stay grounded during these rather whirlwind years. One of our new favorite movies, A Wrinkle in Time, will appeal to just about every family.…

7 Entryway Design Tips and Ideas
1). Landing Spot. This could be a console table, bench or a Japanese Tansu or even dress of drawers. Figure out how much space you have in this area and go from there. 2). Storage. We store our dog’s lease, keys and knick knacks in a felt IKEA basket I found a few months back. At the time I wasn’t sure what I was going to use it for but I love the contrast with the Japanese Tansu. Think about what you plan to use it for and buy the size you need. IKEA has a ton of containers on the cheap! 3). Seating. I found this cute felt…

Create an Indoor Oasis
Lately I have been really into gardening. I find it relaxes me and I love seeing my little garden bloom! And now I’ve moved onto bringing more houseplants into our new place. I love having plants in each room and I’ll share with you some pictures of our new plant additions. I almost feel like we need to start giving them names like Earl, our Staghorn Fern which I picked up at an estate sale over 15 years ago. They estimated that “he” was already 40 years old. Being so old, you can see why I thought he deserved a name. I went on a hunt to find some easy-to-care-for houseplants…
