Colin Eldred-Cohen: From Bedtime Storyteller to Published Author
Colin Eldred-Cohen has fiction and nonfiction story ideas constantly buzzing around his head in all kinds of genres: blog posts, magazine articles, comic books and full length novels. They can spring up from anywhere, from media I consume to any random thing I see. Some of the story ideas get channeled into writings, some become plots for roleplaying games I play with my friends. I want to say that it’s a gift of the Asperger’s, but one never knows. But never did Colin imagine that his first published work would be a children’s book! The Fire Truck Who Got Lost was inspired by a charming tale he made up on…

The Fiona Drink: Inspired by Tim Burton’s Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children
After seeing an early screening of Tim Burton’s newest movie Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children we were inspired to create a drink that Tim Burton fans could enjoy! Be sure to check out our review of this awesome and peculiar movie here out in theaters September 30th. Here is what he has to say about his inspiration in creating The Fiona: As the watermelon/sage ice cube melts in this herbal smoky cocktail, the powers (ability to control plants) of a…

What they care about is that the kids they play with are friendly and inclusive and compassionate. As I prepare my research for a forthcoming children’s nonfiction book about the Civil Rights Movement I am reminded that there was a time when it was commonplace to draw dividing lines based on skin color. When schools were segregated and children were limited to friends who looked the same. We made so much progress. Sadly, too often, I find…

Yes, go to your library and get books. Join some summer reading programs. And encourage children to read for at least 20 minutes a day on their own. But here are a few other ways to keep their brains in business so they are ready for…
